I am always amazed at how many different insects I keep finding in my garden. However, this one I found in my HALLWAY! Well, I do live in the country! Moth by on Flickr: This is what it turned into after I put it on a flower in the garden, in the sunshine: Moth 2 by on Flickr If you look closely, the red is the underside of the wing and you can just see red spots on the black inside of the wing, which makes me think it is a Six Spot Burnet Moth. I may be wrong, there are, out there, Five Spot Burnets and some are referred to as butterflies. If it is the moth it is a daytime flying moth. This is the link when I researched it on-line, if you are interested. www.wildlifetrusts.org/wildlife-explorer/invertebrates/moths/six-spot-burnet-moth

It's beautiful My brother studies insects and writes a blog. He can reel off the latin names, tell you what sex it is, what it eats, it's breeding habits and everything. His speciality is sp*ders,(yes I know they are not insects) a word I can barely write and a creature that I am so afraid of that I have had therapy (which hasn't helped).

It's stunning Shirls. It looks newly hatched in the first pic as it's wings haven't fully expanded. I love the colourful moths. Sorry to hear about your fear of the unmentionable non-insects blue48 . I hope your brother didn't taunt you with them too much!

Definitely appears to be a moth as opposed to a butterfly, but I’ve never seen that one before. It’s very pretty!

Sorry to hear about your fear of the unmentionable non-insects blue48 . I hope your brother didn't taunt you with them too much! He didn't start studying them until we were adults. I have looked at a leg (ugh!) under a microscope, and an eye which looked amazing actually. He tried to get me interested, he thought if I understood more about them it would help but it didn't. My sister was the one who taunted me with them when I was a kid.
Here's his blog if anyone is interested but if it's not allowed Marianne Marlow please remove it.

I think that’s a Cinnibar moth, I prefer moths to most butterflies.

I've never seen a newly emerged moth or butterfly before. What a wonderful thing to have in your hallway. Thanks for the link to your brother's blog blue48 . It looks really interesting. I've done a lot of plant and insect identification in the past but haven't done much for so long that I've forgotten many of the names I used to know. I'm sure I'll relearn some by looking at your brother's blog. I've read the two newest entries and I really like how it is written and it's very interesting too.

blue48 you're brave looking at the body parts in closeup. It's a shame it didn't help. The blog looks great - thanks!

Thanks for the kind comments about my brother's blog. He's 83 now and used to be a teacher. His blog keeps him active and he really enjoys doing it although I'm not sure if anyone other than friends and villages actually read it. He was the county's leading arachnologist and has done talks on the local radio.

I think that’s a Cinnibar moth, I prefer moths to most butterflies. You could be right, they are both very similar. Difficult to check with the one I had as it didn't open it's wings fully, not in my presence anyway!!

Oh I would have LOVED looking at insects under the microscope blue48! That would have definitely been my cup of tea Just LOVE compound eyes of insects. I think thats where my love of Macro photography comes from. Thanks for the link to your brothers blog, shall check that out now! Lovely Moth Shirls - is there a cocoon shell somewhere near where it emerged do you think?

Sam said 'Lovely Moth Shirls - is there a cocoon shell somewhere near where it emerged do you think?' There probably is somewhere samwiseg, haven't seen one, but I expect it's tucked away in a little crevice somewhere and there are quite a few crevices in my house, usually inhabited by spiders!!!
