Hello everyone! I am very new to birdkeeping, but I've been an avid birdwatcher (and budgie admirer) for a while! I got my first budgie a week ago tomorrow, but it wasn't exactly planned. My dad noticed a budgie on our windowsill, so of course we brought him in. The poor little bird was shivering and hungry, but we warmed him up and feed him some millet and banana, which he took with pleasure. We've been looking for the owner, but the local animal control has reason to think that he was let go on purpose There is only one shelter in our area, and it's already overcrowded, especially with the pandemic, so we agreed to keep him as a stray hold for at least the 10 days. However, if no one claims him, it looks like he may be staying with us. Don't worry though, we did get him a budgie seed/pellet mix, a proper cage, and some toys and the like. So I've started with very little knowledge and preparation, but I've been doing a lot of research, and I'm just trying to learn all I can! I definitely have some questions, so I'm sure that you'll be seeing me around the other threads

Oh, bless you for taking the poor little thing in. Who would let a budgie out on purpose There are some cruel people out there. Glad he found you before he was attacked by cats or other birds. I think you were destined to become a budgie owner. Welcome to the forum

Definitely fate that he chose your windowsill to rest on. Well done for taking him in and caring for him. That's exactly how I got my first budgie when I was a child - he turned up as a stray on our gatepost and no owners could be found. Sad to think that anyone would intentionally release a budgie into the wild to fend for itself, there really are some nasty people out there. Glad he's found you though

Welcome to you and your new feathered friend. I have a budgie that was found outside with quite bad scalyface, we believe he may have been let go on purpose too. He's been with us almost two years now. Hope to see photos!

Thank you so much for the warm welcome everyone! I too feel like he was supposed to come into my life at this point. My family dog passed away in February, and it has been really hard on everyone. She was such a big part of our lives. He doesn't have a name yet, but here is a picture! I don't want to name him until I know that he's staying here. I'm thinking Winston though, because that was the singer of the first song he sang along to

I was wondering what other people do, but I've seen so many different things, I wasn't sure. I'll definitely put some newspaper on the bottom today!

A little update! We are keeping him, as no one has claimed him, and thus have settled on a name! I've named him Arthur Budgerelli, because I am a huge Happy Days fan! I'll have to introduce him to the show and his namesake one of these days, haha He's still a little timid, but he's being more adventurous each day, so I'm very proud of him. He's even been eating millet spray from my hand!
