Hi, I am new here, but not new to keeping budgies. Our current bird is an old fellow, we have had him for around twelve years. He is normally lively and loves to fly around to his usual playing spots. The last week or so though he has behaved as though he has trouble seeing the places he lands on and can fall a little short. Last night however he tried to fly back to his cage and just fell on the ground. Luckily there was a chair there and he had a soft landing. He made a few attempts to get back to his cage but couldn't lift off. He has not moved around his cage very confidently today, and when he just chirped to be let out at the usual time, he whistled for me to fetch him. He made a very small attempt to fly again and just went straight down to the chair underneath. I have placed him back in the cage for a rest and to keep him safe. He has not moulted, and has been chirping at the birds outside today. Is there something we should be looking for that we may have missed? Thank you in advance.

Poor little guy. I'm no expert and the real experts should be on soon. It sounds to me that he probably needs to be checked by an avian vet. Do have one nearby or maybe one that can do a Skype visit with you?

I'm no expert and agree a vet maybe able to determine what's going on. Birds can get cataracts with trauma or old age, also some as they get old don't fly as well. Hopefully it's nothing serious.

Sorry, but it does sound like age has caught up with him. Make sure he is able to get around his cage okay, check that his eyesight is okay. Hopefully it is only his eyesight that is failing him, but I would be making the most of, and appreciating, every moment that you can spend with him.
