BertieB has been fine today, playing, eating and his usual active self. He had a little snooze at lunchtime then started opening and closing his beak and stretching his neck up and down like he was going to be sick. I thought at first he was choking then I realised he didn't seem in distress and I distracted him with some lettuce which he is eating now, but it scared me. I haven't seen it before. His droppings are fine and I'm sure it's just me being overprotective, but is this normal behaviour for a budgie without a mate?

He really worried me this afternoon. First there was the above 'incident', then he was really quiet for a couple of hours, and now he has suddenly perked up, chattering, preening and beating up poor Pingu the penguin. Sometimes I think I watch him too much.

blue48 I really don't have much experience at all and I might be way off the mark but I've seen the 'neck stretching and beak opening like he's going to be sick' behaviour occasionally from Willow and I thought it was him adjusting his crop. Maybe the experts can confirm if this is correct? As with Bertie it only went on for a couple of minutes and he was fine afterwards. I hate seeing it though!! Willow behaves differently when he is regurgitating seed for his perch/swing/toy. I can usually tell he's doing it by the beak-bops and little tweets as he gets excited followed by a slightly rattly noise as he delivers the seed and sometimes I can hear a couple of seeds hitting the cage floor. I keep telling him that he doesn't need to show the perch what a good provider he is but he doesn't listen! Thankfully he doesn't do it very often. I know what you mean about watching them too much, it gives you more to worry about but it does mean that you get to know your bud really well and can easily spot what's usual/unusual for them. Good excuse to spend lots of time together too

Most likely, if he didn't bring anything up, he had a seed husk caught down his throat, or something else that might have been a little scratchy. Single males most definitely can regurgitate to almost anything that takes their fancy (literally!), mostly mirrors and bells.
FYI, vomiting generally starts off the same way as regurgitating but rapidly turns into something more violent and less controlled, with the bird obviously not being in a happy place. Once the matter has been brought up they will toss their head around to get rid of it which is why they end up with it all over themselves. Regurg comes from the crop and is normal; vomit comes from further down the digestive system and isn't good or normal.

Thanks for your replies. He seems perfectly fine this morning but I will be keeping an eye on him. I hope he wasn't vomiting, I don't think anything came up. If it was an attempt at regurgitation then it was to his carousel.

It sounds more as though he had a seed husk or something similar stuck.

started opening and closing his beak and stretching his neck up and down like he was going to be sick. It’s so strange you’ve written exactly what Sky does randomly sometimes, I have seen Sol do it too! It’s like a silent looking choking but not vomiting or regurgitating as nothing comes up. It doesn’t last for long either. It’s most peculiar, I don’t think it’s anything to worry about x

Pip always regurgitates usually over my lovely false nails and coats them, it is like cement when it dries. Had a new computer so I have had to save my old laptop for him to play on and feed the screen.

I have Hezz, there is no way he is getting seed and poop on my lovely new lap top. He has had a bad moult and sulking in his cage at the moment and will not come out. Typical male, feeling sorry for himself!
