Hello, I am new to this forum and to budgie keeping! I would just like to ask your advice on my budgie's leg and claw, his leg is twisted so his claw points inward and he cannot use it as well as his other one. Is this a common problem with budgies and can it be rectified? The local vets are only doing emergencies during lockdown hence why I am asking advice here first. He has had it since we got him so it is possibly a birth defect. It does not seem to cause him any pain, it just makes it awkward for him to climb as easily as his friend. Any advice as to what I should do would be welcomed! Thank you!

Poor little soul. I'm quite new to budgie keeping too, so definitely no expert, but I'm wondering how old he is? I have seen posts on here about corrections to baby budgie's legs but I would assume if he's older and his bones are fully formed it would have to be surgery or some sort of splint.
I think if you could post a picture some of the more experienced members could give a better opinion.

Thank you! I will try and post a picture for you, he's not very old, about 4 months.

The most I feel you can do for him is some remedial massage on his foot and joint - it could be a birth defect or an old injury but either way it sounds like it has been this way for some time so I don't know whether you will have any luck correcting it to any extent. It looks to me as though the foot has been damaged at the wrist. If he isn't used to being handled you might cause more stress than it's worth for any good you might be able to do for him. If you have an avian vet, could you send some photos and ask for any suggestions by email?
For his further health make sure you regularly check that foot for any signs of sores as it would appear that he is putting weight on parts of his foot that would not normally have to bear weight. He may develop pressure sores in these spots - very painful and hard to get rid of. Providing him with a platform perch so that he can rest that foot might be appreciated, if not yet then possibly as he gets older.
