I feel like I'm always making concerned posts about taming my budgies on here, but I guess that's what a forum is all about. Today I tried to take one of my budgies out of her cage and she started freaking out and flapping around. She wouldn't step up outside the cage, so I was forced to grab her and put her back in her cage. How can I get them comfortable with being outside the cage without endangering them again? Should I get their wings clipped just for the time when I want to tame them?

Take them into a small room when you want to work with them out of the cage. Some birds do feel threatened being taken out of their cage so it is best to work towards this very slowly. Have them stepping up and down before attempting to get them out, when out practice doing the same thing and also practice getting them back into the cage. Use a spare perch as a training stick if you feel they respond better to that than your finger. Is the door in/out of the cage small or a good size? Many budgies are not comfortable going through a small gap initially.

I think I'm going to try taking them into the bathroom to practice coming out. The door is very big and she didn't have a problem with me taking her out of the door, she was just very alarmed to learn that I had fully removed her from the cage.

How about attaching a perch to the outside of the cage beside the door? When you take her out on your finger, put her on that perch so she can look around. She may hop right back inside but she will get used to sitting there and then will start exploring the outside. Be patient, it might take awhile. You can also try clipping a treat next to that perch to encourage her to stay out longer. That worked for my little guys.

As Hezz says I would be concentrating on teaching step up inside the cage for now. Just get your bird to step up and say step up and move her from one perch to another and when you put her down on the perch say step down or something similar. Then maybe feed her treats out of the palm of your hand and see if she will step up on to it of her own accord. When you are confident that she is stepping up and down overtime you ask then you can try very slowly and gradually moving her towards the door. If she hops away try again another time and just keep trying. Eventually she will want to go with you when you move out of the cage.
