... stole the world's heart". I heard about this book from this interview with the authors, and I've just had a look at the Kindle sample. It's not available for sale as a paperback - in the UK at least - till November, and then not-cheap (£12.99), but I suspect I may end up buying it all the same!

That does not seem expensive for a book, to me. It's not a small book and at 260 pages, seems quite reasonable. Books must generally be dearer here.

It did seem a little on the expensive side to me too, but I know that with small print-runs publishers do need to hike prices a bit. Mind you, if budgies were as popular as they should be, this would NOT be a small print-run ! I'll let you know if I take the plunge in November ...

I saw it had a good price reduction (about 30%) here so I got the kindle version. It sounds good - thanks for the tip! I'll let you know how I like it.

I just finished reading this book. About the first third of the book was primarily about the people in the mid-1800's who went to Australia to capture budgies and bring them back to England. Poor little guys - many didn't survive the ocean voyage. Interspersed are short tales of famous budgies or famous people who owned budgies. The tale then switched to breeders and the spread of budgies as pets throughout the world and the passage of laws in Australia to protect parrots and laws elsewhere concerning the humane treatment of budgies. There is also information about famous budgies like Disco. I liked it and recommend it especially if you can get it through your library.

Thanks for the review, tweetiepiesmom. The first chapter can be read on google books for free and I quite liked it. Well-written and not a rehash of well-known material. With what you say, I think I'll take the leap and get it.

I picked this up after seeing this thread as I felt the need to read some budgie-related stuff to help me grieve Charlie and, annoyingly, everything else seems to be care guides so I was glad to see a proper book ABOUT them. Have only read the intro and the first chapter but enjoying it so far!
