Tweetie Pie thinks his food dish is a toy! He grabs it and pulls it closer to his perch. Then he grabs the rim of the dish and lifts and drops it back down in the ring that holds it. When he first did it, I thought he was telling me he wanted move food. I added more to his dish but no, he was playing. So every time I walk by his cage I move it over. He grabs it, moves it back and lifts and drops it. I'm going to be impressed if he manages to lift it out of that ring holding it.

OK - I may have to eat my words. I have 4 of those stainless steel dishes in the cage - two with their seed mixture, one with water and one with their sprouts. Today Tweetie Pie moved on to picking up and dropping down the sprout dish and other food dish as well as the one he was already playing with. The sprout dish is the lightest in weigh so he almost got that one clear of the ring. I waited for him to try the water dish and get soaked but no, he's not going to entertain me with that. What is he doing? Does he like it because it moves and makes a lot of noise? Should I consider getting him a toy that will make a lot of noise when he plays with it?

Probably knows you’ll move it, a great game I reckon

He's a bird, and this is what almost all birds will try. Most likely a game, but don't think he won't get the pot out if you leave him to it. They are surprisingly strong. I'm sure the noise factor is all part of it as well. Why do they throw their toys and anything else off the top of their cages, or anywhere else for that matter? Because they can! Give him time until he starts bumping it up from underneath.

Oh dear, more fun to come! I guess I should be happy that he's settling in, being comfortable and acting like a bird! I've had him for nine months now.

My boys like to play with their food dishes too. They are plastic so don't make such an interesting noise but they like to grab hold and push them up and down, so they rattle.

Thanks criswell - good to know this isn't unusual. I guess he likes the noise and it has become part of his "play". He's doing it to three of the cups but not the one holding his water. Two of them he lifts in its ring holder and drops it back down. One of them he pulls forward and lets it bang back against the cage. I'm starting to get used to hearing bang, bang, bang all day. Please, play with another toy sometimes! At least when he comes out to fly around I get some relief!

Do they have a bell? My boys have this one. www.northernparrots.com/stainless-steel-bell-parrot-toy-small-prod343065/It's quite heavy and makes a really nice proper bell noise. The bell part is about 3 or 4 inches. Criswell loved it and he would ring it to get my attention if I left the light on after I put them to bed or if there was something else he wanted. Dean Stockwell is best friends with the bell now and and talks to it and rings it.

The only bells that they have are the little ones that are part of a toy. I have ordered them a larger bell. Hopefully Tweetie Pie will like it better than the food dishes to play with and Buddy will enjoy it also.

He did it, the little scamp!!! He cleared the dish ring this morning with the dish holding their chop and dropped the dish to the bottom of the cage. It scared him and Buddy. Both were sitting on the perch all skinny and quiet. I got the dish and filled it with more chop and put it back in the ring holder. Tweetie Pie was sitting next to the holder and went flying madly and then Buddy started flying also. What, did he think it became alive and jumped out of the ring? They settled back down but were on alert. I held a bauble of millet for them to eat and then they started to chirp again. So, will Tweetie Pie still continue playing with his food dishes? Stay tuned.

Now he's working on his seed dish. He actually got it unhooked on side from his cage. What do you think about putting a cleaned rock in his dish? He may still be able to pick the dish up and down in its holder but maybe it'll be too heavy for him to get it over the holder ring? As long as he's not afraid of it and won't eat, Tweetie Pie is my skittish boy. I'd try one dish at a time just to make sure.

I've put clean stones, a rock in dishes before today. I can't actually remember if that worked or not! He will of course grow out of all these activities, but you could look at using different shaped and sized dishes, ones that may be harder to bump out. Most food pots are far too big for what a budgie or two will eat in a day, so if the weight of a rock is enough to deter him, well and good.

I'm impressed that he managed to get the pot out! It's so funny that it then frightened him once he'd done it.

Oh this made me laugh! I bet he likes the noise as Murph is EXACTLY the same I always called him my JCB as he would always lift the grit pot, drop it, and watch the grit jump in its receptacle or go on the floor! Hours of fun and a load of wasted grit! He also likes to do this with most things, like the platform that he sits on. Had to peg it there in the end as he did eventually fall off Here is the little scamp attempting it:

That is so funny samwiseg - he's really working hard at it. I did put a rock in the food cup. He could still lift it up some but I think it was too much work for him so he's given it up. I removed the rock. Let's see if he starts it up again or moves on to another activity.
