I decided that it would be a good idea to train Tweetie Pie and Buddy to come to me in case I needed to get them when they are out of their cage. Tweetie Pie would be the more challenging one to train because he's not very tame, is timid and skittish. I started by calling his name and holding a bauble of millet near him when he was out of the cage. I gradually increased the distance to about a foot away so he'd have to fly to me. Yesterday we had a bit of a break through. Tweetie Pie was playing on top of his cage and Buddy was inside the cage. I held up the bauble of millet so he could see it and called his name. He came running to the front of the cage and looked. I lowered my hand to the level of the cage door and stood about 2 feet away from the door. Tweetie flew down to the perch beside the door and then flew over onto my hand to eat his millet. Of course Buddy was watching all of this. He came out and flew onto my hand. Tweetie Pie was almost finished eating the millet. The two squabbled a few seconds and Tweetie flew back to the door perch and Buddy finished the few seeds left. How sweet was that!
Buddy flew back to the cage and I went to get another bauble. I returned to my position in front of the cage and called Buddy. He immediately came for his millet. Meanwhile, Tweetie Pie was sitting on the door perch, leaning out like he wanted to come for some more millet. I held my arm up parallel to the floor and he flew over and perched on my arm. He had never done that before. Instead of trying to get the millet from Buddy, he stayed on my arm "tasting" my skin and nibbling at the hairs and moles. When Buddy finished and flew back to the cage, Tweetie Pie followed him. Slowly success comes!
