Hi all. So on Saturday (11th July) I got a 12 week old budgie. Not sure on sex yet as it is suppose to be an albino so I'll refer to the budgie by its name "Twiglet".
So I had to get Twiglet out of the box and into its brand new cage on Saturday. My plan was just to put the box in the door way etc but Twiglet had other plans, I slowly opened the box and Twiglet came out on to my hand and then on my arm. After a few minutes obviously twiglet flew away. Not far, closer enough for me to gently grab. Didn't think about a towel or anything, it was a reaction, Twiglet didn't seem scared or even try to get away or bite me.
Anyway I let Twiglet settle in and left Twiglet alone other than talking to Twiglet. Since then, Twiglet is acting like a child/baby. Twiglet seems to run around then cage, using everything in the cage to do summer salts or hang up side down, chew everything, running back and forth the bottom of the cage, digging, rolling, sleeping in its food bowl, having baths in the water bowl. Twiglet is basically mad!
I should mention that Twiglet came from an Avery, the owner apparently took Twiglet out the second Twiglet started leaving the nest.
Anyway, yesterday Twiglet was running back and forth its bottom for which felt like a long time do I got concerned, I put my hand in slowly as its has never bothered Twiglet at all, I was ignored all the time, just did what Twiglet wanted to do and that's it, this time I put my hand slowly closer to Twiglet, its had a bit if a twerp/shout at me but then came to my hand and sort of nibbled me so I lent in further and Twiglet got on to my hand/fingers/palm and stayed there for at least 10 minutes with my thumb stroking Twiglet, it started cuddling into me and started to fall to sleep. I tried to take a picture but every time I got my phone in sit Twiglet would have a good shout at me.
I have found with Twiglet that a little force is good for Twiglet, not so much as to scare or frighten or even get it angry enough to bite because Twiglet has a mind of its own. I have already said that Twiglet completely ignored you entirely, you try to give millet but Twiglet will look at you and basically say sorry I'm going to play, Twiglet doesn't run away in fear or anything or even try to fly away from you but you can see that Twiglet just wants to do what Twiglet wants.
Is this normal behaviour for a baby/Avery bird?
Twiglet has a few toys and different type of perches so that Twiglet doesn't get bord when no one is home.
