Haha! Sorry! This is Indie, my shy sky blue violet opaline boy. He doesn’t like coming out and avoids my hand inside the cage, unless he’s hungry and I have seeds on my palm. So I spend about 5 minutes an hour with my hand in his cage, though the number of times I offer him food before putting the bowl in for him varies. Trying to get more consistent. He doesn’t know what millet is (or doesn’t like it) and doesn’t play with anything, but he is over a year old so that’s not surprising, and he’s been here about a month and a half now. But he will at least step up onto a stick on command, though keeping him on it is a tad more challenging. And this is Yuki, who’s challenging to get a good picture of. I think he’s some sort of violet recessive pied, at first I thought he was grey. I’ll probably know better once he moults. His wing markings are so few and far between that I can’t tell if they’re brown or grey rather than black, or just so small and spread out that they look unusual. He was really tough to name. A bit like a cloud, a bit like an owl, flew like a moth, etc. So we went with Yuki, which is pronounced ‘you-key’ for anyone who doesn’t know Japanese pronunciation, and means snow. He’s very cheeky and likes trying to leap out of the cage, or ‘popcorns’ with frustration on the cage floor when the door is shut. He’s more nervous of my hands than Indie, or perhaps just more confident in moving away, and will eat from my palm but only if he doesn’t have to stand on me to reach, but is more confident otherwise. When out he’ll find a perch, usually my lampshade, and tends to stay there unless something excites him, but can put himself back in his cage (which is good because getting him on the stick is tough). He also knows what a few greens are, though doesn’t rush to eat them, and has discovered his millet spray. He’s been here two weeks. Indie’s currently in a Hamberley in the living room, and Yuki’s in quarantine in my room in a travel cage that’s big enough to flap about in but is hopefully only a month-long tenure. They’ll probably move up to my room because they can have more freedom up there than they can when sharing a living room with the cat. Plus Yuki’s the confident one so it makes sense to keep him in the room he knows to be able to teach Indie. I think. Speaking of which, she’s been pretty good. When we got Indie we set him up in the living room because I wanted a budgie companion but also my housemates. We hung fabric around the bottom half of the cage so that if Lily became interested and got close then all she would see would be a faceful of fabric. We slowly lowered that as she lost interest and sprayed her with a squirt bottle when she was naughty (and gave her treats when she ignored him), and now she has barely any interest. She rarely even chitters when he flits about in the cage. On the occasions I’ve had to bring Yuki down there (socially distanced from Indie by the length of the room) because of things like lubricating the squeaky door, she has shown more interest in him because he’s new, but we’ve all stayed present or shut her out of the room if she’s been problematic. Oh, and this was Yuki the day he hatched: Edit: By the way, any idea how to teach them to stay on the taxi stick? Indie's having a naughty day today, jumping off it early. So I keep retrieving him until I can say 'down' to get him onto a perch, but that results in maybe one success, at which point I don't know whether to keep going or end so the session finishes on a positive (to me, at least).

Lovely photos and great story to go with them. When Spyro is being a little git and won't do anything I want him to, if he is on the perch and I want to put him away, I find that the faster I move him on the perch seems to help. Whether that is because he is busy keeping his balance and keeping himself orientated, or his little brain hasn't caught onto the fact that he is going somewhere he doesn't want to go, or a bit of both, I'm not too sure. But that's just him - he doesn't like stepping onto my hand outside of the cage.

Thanks Hezz! I’ve noticed Indie stays on better if I move the stick about quickly to stop him having chance to jump off, unless I make for the cage door in which case he’s off like a shot. Both are still at the stay of moving away if I approach them with my hand, but hopefully we’ll be able to work on that, even if millet doesn’t become a big hit. I’m still so used to the way Munchy would just come to me, and I know that’s less likely with these two but I’d like to work at it. Even if we get to them getting on the stick and not being afraid of me that would be something. I think if I’d gotten Yuki or a budgie like him first then I might have stuck with just having the one and devoting more attention to him, but poor Indie still seems a bit lost and unwilling to try new things. It didn’t seem fair to him after he’d been with other budgies for over a year, and I think Yuki will do him good.

Happy belated birthday, sorry I haven’t been around, I’ve had loads of cake orders, it’s really taken off. My pickle was born on the 8th June.

helenmat Completely forgot at the time because my brain is a sieve. Glad to hear that you’re getting so many orders. Bet is keeps you busy! Hezz Having a wobble day today, and also an uncertainty. Haven’t even fed them breakfast today as my partner and I will be out for a good chunk of the morning. Part of me wonders how much good putting my hand in the cage does. The logical part of my brain knows that at least it gradually shows them that the hand doesn’t bring anything bad, even if it’s not always bringing anything good. The other thing is about which room to keep them in. The room I spend my time in will vary based on what my partner’s doing. If he’s home I tend to spend most time in my room, and if not I’m in the living room with my housemates if they’re working from home. They would have more freedom in my room because of not ‘competing’ with the cat, and if Yuki decides to jump out of the cage there won’t be a panic over it. But if my partner’s home and has stayed up late the night before and I’m trying to hand feed them then they might be waiting a while to be properly woken up and have breakfast. Although thus far I haven’t seen him stay in bed longer than about 9am. Edit: I stumbled across the pet store where Yuki's breeder works. His sister's in there for sale now because no one wanted 'an ordinary blue budgie'. It was hard to leave her behind. Also, I think Yuki is cinnamon because his scanty wing markings appear brown.
