It has been a while, so an update on how they are doing.
Misty is my oldest, not sure how old but he came to me at more than six months old nearly eight years ago ... wow, time certainly has gone. He's had fatty liver disease for years now and a chronic sinus infection, also for several years, which we have not been able to completely rid him of. He is on milk thistle in his water for the liver and steamy saunas when his sinus infection kicks off, usually in the wet weather. With neither has he shown too much illness except from periodic vomiting we (vet and I) think happens when his liver is feeling the strain. Besides being a bit tubby which I never seem to be able to move, he is otherwise presenting as healthy. His beak doesn't overgrow any more, that just seems to have resolved itself. The only other option for his sinus issue besides more AB's is to drill into his sinus cavities and flush them out, something I am not keen to do for obvious reasons.
Spyro was my last acquired, early 2014 but again, already at least six months old, so he would be seven years old. Besides breaking his leg early on and also being on the tubby side, he hasn't had any health issues to date. He came to me shortly after getting Mango, another story, because he was too intense for the rosa bourke he was supposed to be a companion to. He is a full-on little fella, will chat up everything and anything. He and Loki have "special" relationship.
These two boys, and Loki, spend the time that I'm working in the aviary which for some reason seems to really suit Misty - he seems to do better in the aviary - maybe due to him not sitting on the outside of Mango's cage all day long. More exercise? Possibly. More sun? Doubtful, especially at this time of year. Outside air? Again, doubtful as our house is never closed up, but who knows?? It works, that's the main thing.
Mango, dear sweet little Mango. All she wanted from life was a little clutch of her own. Misty and Mango are still the strongest pair, even though they haven't seen each other without bars between them for about the last four years. These two could teach us a lot. Mango became a chronic egg layer, one of the worst the vet had seen, apparently. We tried everything also humanly possible to break her out of that, finally succeeding only when her poor little body was badly compromised. I get emotional about this, I feel that if I had been allowed to let her have a clutch that she would have been satisfied with that and her health wouldn't have been compromised. At that stage I didn't have the aviary which would have negated any opposition to a few more budgies in the house. Mango is almost seven years old now, but unfortunately due to her egg laying has displaced hips and a sway-back. she also has a small lipoma around her back end, due, vet thinks, to all the stretching that was done over the egg laying time. She lives in her flight cage on her own with ladders etc set up to help her get around. To make things worse, she has on one foot a toe that was injured sometime in the past and doesn't bend and another that I think Loki go hold of and injured, and now goes the wrong direction, all one the leg that she has the least control over, so she does have a hard time moving around. She spends quite a bit of time moving around by the roof of her cage and even hanging from the roof for periods of time. It seems it must be easier on her joints. I actually never thought she would still be okay at this stage of her life, given that she has been in this position for about four years now. Vet assures me she is not in any pain, and she doesn't seem to be, she still comes out for a fly but mangles her landings, so that doesn't happen too often in case she hurts herself more. She is the dearest, sweetest little girl. And Loki hates her!
(Loki is the sun conure, the latest addition, four years old in November. He gets on well with the budgies boys, especially Spyro.)
