Very pretty. Hope Birdy thinks the same, and yes, it does look safe. He's been having a field day with it. Who knew a little bit of fun paper could be so... fun? Almost too fun... last night I looked under the cage cover and he still hadn't gone to sleep because he was too busy playing with it.
I also made this helicopter toy with icecream spoon sticks and beads (strung together with a leather string)

Good to see he is appreciating your efforts; it is very rewarding to make a toy that they actually use. Too often they get completely ignored.

Hezz , very true. Although at the rate he's going, I'll have to make a few. He's like a little velociraptor right now and is shredding up the finger traps part (hopefully not eating it, but it should be safe I'm thinking). My mother already wants a few made for her birds as well lol
Edit: Actually, I've removed the shreddables for the night. I just inspected one of the finger traps with pieces missing, and it does appear he's eating them as there is no bamboo in the pull out tray below. I'm still hoping that's harmless, but better not to risk anything while I can't keep an eye on him.

The bamboo should be perfectly safe for him to eat. While with most things chewed you end up with a pile of scraps underneath, you have to expect that a certain amount is going to be ingested. that is why you go to so much trouble to make sure all the elements of the toys are budgie-safe.

Hezz the bamboo toy has been back in for a few days now. I think he's finally figured out that it's not meant to be eaten. I check it daily, and had to make a new one today since he's finally discovered the joys of just demolishing it. There was a pretty good pile of bamboo splinters on the bottom of the cage. I changed it up a little, adding both the fun paper, and a little bit of unrolled paper rope + a sola chip jammed in with it. He's pretty funny with the whole thing - it's become like a combo jungle gym and ferris wheel; He climbs it, wrestles with the toy chewing and pulling it apart, then as it slowly turns, he hops back on the perch and climbs it again.

Sounds like you are on a winner there. You will have to make him a few more, though, so that you don't get caught short and find yourself getting told off in a very budgie way.

Well done with making something he enjoys. Shredding toys definitely seem to go down well.

Seems I was able to make use of that sea grass. It may not be pretty, but he followed my hand while I was hanging the toy, and immediately started playing with it

I got some of those teething rings you suggested, Hezz. Yuki was beaking them instantly.

Can I say told I you you would?? He's certainly out to give anything a try; good boy! He really is! Funny thing is, that he probably liked the sea grass the best (even if he hasn't really been able to chew through it beyond one or two tiny pieces). I'm going to add another seagrass strip at the bottom of the toy if I can; otherwise he wants me to hold him up higher so he can easily reach all the best parts.
I actually cut off another piece and sat on the floor with my arm in the cage holding it. He sat there for ages playing with it. And he was so happy that he kept sticking his little head under my thumb for head scritches (and then would go back to playing). I think every day he does something different that amazes me.
Btw, I keep saying how my toys aren't very neat or pretty, but the nice thing is, he doesn't seem to care lol
@sillycat84, I bet that would make a fun climbing toy as well
