Hello, I am new here and so grateful to have found this forum. Thank you. Here's the issue (and attached photos): One of my two budgies, Jingle, 6, has an eye issue ... I took him to the (avian) vet and she examined him and said she didn't see any scratches (with dye), didn't see any other obvious injuries, and recommended Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates and Dexamethasone for 10 days, two times a day. Jingle will finish the course tomorrow night (Thursday, Aug. 6) but i don't see any improvement -- in fact, though it doesn't seem to bother him, it seems worse. Otherwise, he is happy and eats and plays and chirps. I rechecked with vet yesterday and she recommends trying a different antibiotic drop that covers a broader spectrum of bacteria. She asked if we don't see any improvement would I consider seeing an ophthalmologist. I am going to pick up the drops later today. I checked also with a budgie breeder online who suggested "golden eye" ointment, but that doesn't seem readily available for small birds. The breeder also suggested cold tea bag compresses. Has anyone seen anything like this and do you have any ideas on how to handle? In advance, I THANK YOU! Photos here: drive.google.com/file/d/1hZqCF_Hsr4XCl0bDjtQ4gTRSY2NkERXm/view?usp=sharing

Oh dear - that looks pretty nasty. Albeit that I don't know anything, I don't think it looks like an obvious infection at least on the external parts of the eye. There doesn't seem to be any crusting or oozing - or maybe there has been and it has cleared now? It looks like something strange going on within the eye itself causing what is presumably bleeding?
No doubt others will have opinions or even experience of this kind of thing. Poor Jingle.

birdguhl, was thinking exactly that - it doesn't look like a (typical) eye infection to me, either. It looks like something much less simple. Without seeing the photos, Golden eye ointment and cold tea bag compresses would have been my suggestions initially, as well. In the week between those photos his eye has definitely deteriorated - at least in the first one you could see the eye structure. I'm sorry, but I don't have any suggestions, except to possibly get a second opinion, whether that be the ophthalmologist, or another avian vet.

It looks complicated to me too. I did even wonder if the budgie was blind in that eye.
Further specialist advice and treatment is needed.

keets How is Jingle doing? Hopefully your vet has been able to figure out what is causing the eye issues. I happened across this picture online, saying the birds eye problem was caused by conjunctivitis. I'm no expert, but it looks similar to your photo from July 28th?
