Today in Cagemantle Heights, Indie has dared to nibble at a piece of strawberry!
Meanwhile, Yuki has had his first attempt at carrot (which may have been cut a bit too thick) and is still giving the broccoli an occasional preen.

What a brave budgie Indie is. Mine are terrified of strawberries.

Munchy was terrified of them for years, then started to love eating the seeds out of them.
Yuki likes the leafy sepals around the stalk.

I recently discovered a type of fruit that my budgies like ... fresh figs!
I have a fig tree and decided to try offering them one of the ripe fruits, sliced in half. They ate everything but the outer skin. I was quite impressed.
They are also fond of broccoli, radishes, and chop.

My previous bird used to do exactly that. Hours of fun.

blueelephant Yesterday I needed him off of the perch the broccoli was pegged next to so I could remove it, so I was wiggling the peg to get him to move away. It just lured him closer.

Cheeky little monkey! I can just imagine. Barney spent nearly an hour tending his broccoli this morning. He is slightly obsessed. I was starting to wonder if it's possible for a budgie to eat too much greens!

Only of ones like spinach, I think, which are also bad for us over certain amounts due to things like iron levels. So I space out my spinach giving, but most else I'm offering daily to get them used to seeing different things.

Indie is still refusing to try anything, but Yuki was strqight over to investigate a piece of red bell pepper this morning, despite it being new. He also had a lick at a piece of melon.
I'll probably give him a couple of blades of the grass I have growing later.

Just curious... what exactly do you grow grass from? I mean, what type of seed? I don't imagine it's the same stuff to get your lawn going - do you just use their regular seed?

My guys are so in love with grass that they have been ignoring other greens that I've put in their cage. Yesterday I sneaked a piece of basil in the middle of their wheat grass. When they had eaten/picked their grass away, they started eating the basil and chowed down on it. Maybe we've turned a corner and they'll start eating more different green things. I tried them with strawberry a couple of times. They were afraid of it - silly guys!

tweetiepiesmom Munchy feared strawberries for years. I have grown regular grass seed before but some varieties seem a bit spindly. Currently I have some sprouted from millet spray and have tried putting in some of their seed mix to see what happens.

@sillycat84 - try using a carrot peeler to peel off a thick (thick for a carrot peeler, that is) slice of carrot for them! Especially hanging, that is one of my budgies favorite veg treats! I recently discovered a type of fruit that my budgies like ... fresh figs! I have a fig tree and decided to try offering them one of the ripe fruits, sliced in half. They ate everything but the outer skin. I was quite impressed. They are also fond of broccoli, radishes, and chop. My birds won’t touch figs! We have tons ripe right now (our own tree and some neighbors, different types) and it’s the only fresh food I haven’t been able to get ANY of them to even taste yet, even my linnie! xD My budgies generally don’t like fruit much, but even they will take a little nibble at half a grape or a bit of strawberry or blueberry, and my linnie eats all the fruit (she’s a tropical jungle bird after all) but even watching me eat them doesn’t interest her. And I thought figs might be a little closer to what she might find in the wild where her species can be found. I’m totally jealous.

I have never liked figs..
Bailey would try anything that I was eating, he was a pretty good boy on veg too, think he even got some in Budshire eating stuff that they hadn't before he arrived

Buddy has started getting curious about what I'm eating. When I sit in my chair to eat, he'll come over to watch. I have held up a banana to the cage a couple of times and he's come over to get a couple of nibbles. He didn't particularly like it. I also tried the broccoli again a couple of days ago. I stuck a piece in with the grass and both nibbled on the florets. I'm happy that their dietary likes are expanding.
