Ira is this when Munchie was older, or always? Benji climbs, but really he zips around his cage by flight all day. He'll also hop if a perch is close enough, or shake his little foot around to let you know he wants a lift lol Hezz Poor thing, although she sounds like she's getting around her cage pretty well! elysianblight That's a good idea as well. Do you place them on a platform in the cage, or so they go down to the bottom to eat from them? For now I've gotten the idea to use the Lixit quick lock birdbath, at least for when I put his fresh veggies in. I just put it back in, and put a few pellets and seeds in there, and he's running around the edge of the dish picking things up. It's bigger than I'd like to be in there all the time, but it really does seem like he enjoys eating from a flatter surface

Ellie I do both actually. They prefer the bowls to be on a platform perch, but they will go to the bottom of the cage as well if I leave it there.

Ellie Sorry, late reply. No, it was ever since he was little. But I think it stemmed from him not having any flight feathers when I got him and then the ones that grew back would break, so he probably wasn't a confident flyer until he was a bit older. By that point climbing in the cage was probably a habit. I'm starting to think I need to get some large shallow dishes. Yuki always seems to want to feed from whichever bowl Indie is using but then chases Indie off because there's not enough room, both with seed bowls and any fresh food that needs to go into a bowl. Water's fine because they don't spend long at that. At least with a big dish they could eat together but have space. Maybe I'll just need to find a way to have clear open space so that there's poop-free room on the floor for a plate or something that they can't move around. Not sure if mine prefer the platforms with the shallower dishes set into them or the deeper ones in the hoops. Yuki seems to end up sitting in the dish more if I use the platforms for some reason.

You might try looking at cat food dishes? Those seem to be very shallow but have enough of an edge for the birds to perch on the edges and/or eat in it.

mikarod Funnily enough I have since acquired a couple of shallow cat bowls. It has minimised bickering over who gets what bowl and the space around it. The only tricky part is finding a good position in the cage for it on weeks when I have a few more perches in there. Or when I'm not sure where they'll sleep. The little bowls I can position up out of the way but they always seem to get pooped in when the birds are out playing. One large bowl is easier to position a gym over. Ooh, perhaps I should see if I can get a big platform that the cat bowl could safely go onto to keep the food up high but in the wider bowl... Not sure if that would take up too much room though.

@sillycat84, a couple of suggestions that might work for you re the birds pooping in their water etc when out of the cage, I presume you are meaning when they are sitting on the top of the cage? I have a couple of solutions that work for me - on top of Loki's cage, which is where the play gym sits and is prime meeting place I have cut a couple of seagrass mats to fit the area under the gym. Very little poop gets through and what does then may get caught on the bars. I like it because the birds can chew on it to their heart's content. Come cleaning day, I take it off and give it a whack and most of the poop falls off! I have also used a piece of ply - easy to clean the poop off it you varnish or paint it first. And on Mango's cage I use an old curtain, or part of, so that she can still climb around on the roof of the cage inside, but nasty conures can't grab her feet.

Love all the ideas and suggestions here.
I serve sprouts in 2 separate shallow dishes to them.. however, both of them always want to eat from one, until Cookie sends breezie away.. Breezie is a fast eater though - I guess he knows Cookie will send him away in a few seconds 😃
Even for veggies, if I have 2 veggie leaves, both are so curious to check out the other's- i guess to see if both are the same! Later, breezie does regurgitate & feed cookie 🥰 Breezie wants Cookie to be at his side all the time.. 😅 When he is angry at her for spending her time away at shredding, he screams at her and she comes running all the way to calm him down for a while and then goes back to her shredding goals! 🥰😍 Breezie shreds too a bit to give her company and then goes back to his music composition! Both of them have such a busy life, so much to do! 😂 They seem like an old happily married couple to me 🙈 and i love it totally!
Initially, when I got them, they were super competitive when it came to food. Since both are not ready to be in separate cages, I ended up keeping two of everything, which resolved the issue, about food or their sleeping swing!
About the cage, I have vertical bars and a few horizontal bars. They love to slide from the top of the cage to bottom and hop from here to there. However, I don't have a cage available here, bigger than 3feet x 2feet x 2 feet. I have heard that budgies move horizontally, so they need wider cages? 🤔 The worst is the sliding door, which I have tied right now! I have requested the seller for a modification, but they aren't ready to do that. I guess that leaves me the only option to get it custom made. What should be the ideal dimensions of the cage for a budgie? I've got a 3 feet stainless steel stand to raise the height of the cage, as opposed to the 1 feet height base right now..

Hezz Those are good suggestions. I think Yuki would love the seagrass mat to chew on. I'll have to track some down.

So now I just need to finalise the decision on which bowls to use. The cat bowls limit squabbling because of the larger area but unless I get a large platform, which would limit both flight space and space around the bowl, I need to arrange the perches to leave a large enough clear area on the cage floor.
The current number of platforms with dishes works but space is somewhat limited. Currently using them for fresh foods but I think Indie prefers the second cat bowl for his egg anyway.
Plus if I used them for seed I would need to buy another for the other bird.
