yellowfacedviolet I hope you don't mind me asking, but what is your take on my dearly departed Hector and Blueboy? I always thought that they were both Cobalt, but they were slightly different shades of Blue.
*sigh* Miss these guys so much. Especially Hector, he loved to bash my thumb, it's almost a year since he passed away at the age of 10 years and 8 months.

For all colors there's a range of tone. In that violet article I linked to in another thread, he discusses this. Some cobalts are lighter, some darker. Same is true for sky blues, dark greens, violets, greys etc.
So based on that, and that I don't see turquoise coloring at the base of the tailfeathers (an indication that one of them is violet sky) I'd say they are both cobalts with Blueboy being deeper toned.

Indeed she is. And to answer a question you asked on another thread, THAT'S my favorite mutation. YFV was a previous favorite. I actually regret using that as a nick--too long and wrong gender!

Violet. Not a guy's name, generally.

Odd thing about Abbie, she was 4 years old when she came to me and never lost her "baby head bars" That's one of the ways new mutations are born. I propose calling this the "Marlow Bars Mutation."
She was gorgeous. I do love violet pieds of all kinds.
Thanks for posting these. They go into my file.

Flecking in opalines is quite common, I understand. To show or not to show? That is the question.

I did not know that this--persistent juvenile barring-- was considered flecking. I thought flecking was black spots. Live and learn.

I understand, from our previous exhibition breeder/moderator, that flecking is any markings on the head at maturity, they don't have to be spots, and highly frowned upon in the exhibition world. Exhibition bred birds that are bred to give that (what I consider quite horrible) big "mask" instead of the dainty little throat spots that the native birds have, needs an excess of melanin (in my lesson for the day) which also often present as this flecking. I didn't get as far as to why the opaline mutation is more prone to it than any other.
