The melanin marking on the beak is lost soon after fledging. Now here is an interesting thought ... an Aussie breeders forum think that the dark beak, indicating an abundance of melanin also contributes to the darkness of the bird's markings. Goes some way to explain Benji's very solid head markings that birdguhl remarked on.

Lovely bird! What a coincidence, her previous owner originally named mine Benji as well! Can relate to the gender struggle, but I'll eat my.. budgie if this one is not a dude. Funny cuz I thought the lilac/blue cere was only common in male inos, but I see em in Benji and yellowfacedviolet 's avatar as well, so are (some) blues included then as well? Or can it occur regardless of other mutations?

Both birds are quite young; that may have confused you.

I haven't managed to grab a photo of it (I'll try when he has more new feathers), but sure enough, his new adult head feathers are growing in on the top of his head as a very light yellow, like many expected! Barry Benji came home as Danny, but it was causing confusion with the dog having a A-Y sound to the name lol. Yes Hezz is right... he's still pretty young (maybe 4 months?), so I imagine it will turn a solid blue with time. I actually wasn't expecting to see a young budgie like this with so much colour in its cere though as most young male budgies I've seen have a fairly pink cere
