I never thought I'd see the day when my boys would fight over the cup of chop! I usually give them one cup to share in the morning containing their cop/sprouts. This morning they started fighting over it! I had to add another cup to bring peace in budgie land. So happy they both love it now.

Mine always seem to want to use the same bowl, no matter what, and Indie will get chased off. But the bowls must be near each other so that Indie then goes to that bowl, too far away and he won't. But they end up getting their tails in the way of the other bowl. Good to hear that your two are loving the chop mix so much now! They must really enjoy those veggies.

It's great that they are enjoying their chop so much. I have 3 boys and 4 food dishes and they still have squabbles over them.

I've just tried my two with a cat bowl and that seemed to work.

There's an idea @sillycat84! I've seen larger feed dishes I think for gerbil cages. Maybe one of those would be good because it is large enough for both to eat without getting in the way.

It also means they can't tip it if I put it on a surface to lure them there.
I was hoping they'd have the cute little pastel ones with the dots like last time, but those were no bigger than their current bowls, only heavier.
Cat dishes also tend to be relatively shallow.

Think you might keep with it regularly?

I started some seeds a couple of days ago Morgan so I'm still waiting for them to sprout. I hope it works and that my guys will like it. If they do, I'll definitely keep it up. Stay tuned...

I'd give anything for BertieB to squabble (with himself) over chop. He's still Mr Picky when it comes to anything that isn't seed although I don't give up. Basil is about all he'll eat. I snuck some sprouted mung beans into his seed bowl today but I know he won't eat them. If I put anything in a dish on his cage he just pushes it off.

Yuki only really seems to go for leaves. They’ll eat egg and sweetcorn, but anything like carrot just seems to get ignored. Peri was the carrot king. He used to love crunching bits off of it, though I don’t know if he ate any!

I was pleasantly surprised when I put some basil in my guys cage that had flowers on it. They really enjoyed the flowers! I hesitated a long time about growing herbs and just got fresh from the grocery store. Now that I have some stuff growing, its fun to see what they'll eat at what stage of growth. I have oregano growing but so far they haven't touched it. I read that its supposed to be good for their respiratory system.

Morgan I just did my morning rinse of the seeds and saw some small white shoots coming out. When do you feed them to your budgies - when you see little leaves coming out or before? I read somewhere that you can tell how fresh the seeds are by how many will grow shoots, so I'll be interested in how many I get. I must admit though that my trial batch is from a bag of seeds that I've had a few months.

I read somewhere that you can tell how fresh the seeds are by how many will grow shoots, so I'll be interested in how many I get. I must admit though that my trial batch is from a bag of seeds that I've had a few months. You can feed some now, and leave the jar out to continue rinsing and sprouting, or wait until they sprout their first two leaves and the seed shells fall off (if you want the leaves to turn green they’ll need a bit of sun when they come out to start producing chlorophyll). You can feed the seeds at any point from after their first rinse and drain after soaking, until you decide they are done. I think the longer you let them go the more veg-like they become in nature, but my budgies hardly ever eat the green parts anyway if I let them go that long. Compared to the seed bit the greens aren’t as tasty I suppose. Of course, if you want to feed them just the greens, let them keep sprouting until the seed shells fall off. At that point they are no longer seeds at all and are tiny little plants. Whenever you decide they have sprouted enough, just put them in the fridge after a final rinse and drain and it should keep up to a week. And yes, fresher seeds should have a much higher germination rate, but if properly stored, seeds can still sprout even after being stored for months and sometimes even years! I’m not recommending this of course for budgie-eating purposes, it’s just fascinating.

The seeds looked like they had sprouted enough to give some to them this morning. Tweetie Pie went over, peered in and walked away. Buddy went over and ate a couple but then left. Lukewarm reception. They got wheat grass this morning and I thought I'd try rosemary. Both tasted the rosemary but didn't dig in. Then they went for the wheat grass. The noise I'm hearing I think is them fussing at me for other food!

tweetiepiesmom - Oh my! I must be fortunate to have such good eaters. None of my buds have ever given me much grief about trying new foods - but maybe I just got lucky that Pig was good with her veggies and maybe the rest learned socially? My buds act like their sprouts are just the same as their seeds - and now compared to the Harrison’s I’ve been feeding them for the first half of the day there’s no contest even with their less preferred veggies (for example my linnie Lottie has always loved bell pepper and a few of my buds not so much - but now they all attack it). Just keep trying! Do you always use the same feeding dish also? I was reading in another post about shallow dishes that someone is using condiment dishes - all the same - so when they put their buds food elsewhere they still are comfortable with it. I always use the same large dish and the same set of smaller ramekins - so maybe that helps too? Whatever goes into those dishes is always “food” in their mind perhaps. Except I always clip their veg because only Lottie likes it chopped so she can pick it up with her feet. Edit: Those sprouts look great by the way! Good job!
