This is Cypress and Citrine's current cage which I got because I read (I believe here) that longer is better than taller. It is 30 inches long and 18 inches deep/tall.
You & Me Finch Rectangle Flight Cage
I do worry its a bit small for two, but they are freely allowed out of this cage 4 hours a day during the week and usually 12 hours a day during the weekends.
I currently have it on a nice wheeled "kitchen cart" that brings it up to chest level and offers storage underneath.
For my personal convenience IF we updated I would love a wheeled cage like this one because it still has storage, has a swinging door instead of a stupid guillotine door, and it has a removable grate for better cleaning. But it seems hard to find QUALITY cages in this style that are wider than the 30" inch they already have.
This one is 32, but has some reviews about paint chipping which is not good. The quality one at our local store is $100 more, but a bit less than 30" long. So with that one they would be losing flight space.
Also, is all that extra vertical space just a waste? They RARELY use the bottom of their current cage. So even if I find a quality one that is longer than 30", I'm torn about whether that little bit of gain would even really benefit them vs other things the $ could be spent on for them?
My bf thinks we should get them an indoor aviary type cage (in case more budgies turn up, but that is not my plan lol), but these don't really seem to come any wider than what they already have, just more squared. Instead of 30x18 they might get 30x30, which is a definite gain in space but does that really increase their room to fly? Also the vertical waste, again.
If we go the aviary route I would want to save up for something more like this corner aviary/cage because it gives more space in ALL dimensions - but again - is it just a waste to have so much vertical room? This replaces this current storage area with cage space they might never use.
