I recently purchased two gorgeous English budgies. The originating breeder told me that English budgies require a higher protein than American budgies due to their larger size. She also said that she does not suggest feeding mash or pellets to her budgies.
I already purchased the Harrison's and it is on the way, but am looking at different seeds to mix the two and so there is at least some level of excitement about their food in the bowls.
Is the higher protein level requirement true? Would egg or egg-food topper work until I can get them onto a pelleted diet or can locate a higher protein seed-based diet?

I don’t own English budgies - so please wait for a more experienced member to come along with more accurate advice - but I have read the same to be true online from more than one source. English budgies are larger bodied and also have more and larger feathers - which require extra protein to grow properly. I believe adding extra egg or egg-food to the diet would suffice. There is another topic on this thread here under feeding that I will link where different seed brands were discussed - that may help in the meantime. budgerigarsforum.proboards.com/thread/19543/opinions-on-pellet-seed-brands

Thank you Schizm23, that's actually one I had been reading but since the diets were pelleted form, and I'm trying to follow the breeders advice, I wasn't sure if I could substitute as needed.
I found a finch food that has a solid 15% protein but 10% fat and am waiting on other feeds to be delivered.

Exhibition budgies are generally less active than their smaller counterparts , these being the pet, native to Australia type, so not every having any myself but other members have, I doubt they would require any extra protein except perhaps in times of a heavy moult. For someone breeding to exhibit, that may not be the case. Do you intend to breed? I guess you would have to go with the breeder's recommendation without further advice from an expert.

Yes, I am planning on breeding them and possibly exhibiting them. I already show chickens, so same thing in theory! LOL! With poultry, I prefer to keep them in breeding and exhibition condition at all times. It keeps them in peak shape and health.
I would assume the same would go for a budgie but there are not many breeders out there willing to divulge their secrets!

I went ahead and got some of Dr. Harvey's "Our Best Parakeet Feed" that has a protein level of 15% and am using Harrison's mash as a topper for it. So far the two are going crazy for it. I'll just add some egg daily for them to eat.
