I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis a month or so ago after a strange lump appeared on my thumb knuckle, inflamed & was excruciatingly painful. I'd had increasing similar pain in my right hip so had an x-ray, normal. Referred to physio, went last week. No OA, but as I'd been very overweight some years ago & this pain started, I'd subconsciously learned to walk in such a way that minimised the pain but has caused all the muscles around my hip to weaken, tighten & now cause more pain than I had in the first place. The physio said I walk like a duck I was telling one of the ladies at work & she said, "Yes, we noticed you had a strange walk..." With a swaying derriere like that, no wonder there're so many grinning faces in windows as I walk across the car-park. I've been shopping today for very big 'n' baggy trousers & extra long, tent-like tops... As if THAT was enough I've got orders from physio, "Now, I want to see you doing these (excruciating) exercises 3 times a day, as well as tai chi. You'll need to buy a latex resistor band (glorified elastic band), we don't provide them any more. It'll heal in 3-6 months. You know where I am if you need any more help." I got a band for half price & noticed when I got home it's "advanced". I haven't tried it. If it doesn't stretch easily I'm going to use a pair of gent's braces I'm so glad it's not OA, though. At least I can keep working for a few more years - oh, I got the job I went for!

Well done on getting the job. Sorry about the painful hip and walking differently because of it. I can relate to that because ever since I had Eve I have had pain in my right hip. I feel like if I am not careful it'll pop out of the socket.

No, ffiscool, I don't get the shooting pain down the outside of my leg like in sciatica. They're random sudden stabbing pains all around my hip, lower back & the top of my leg caused by joint stress & poor gait.

For some reason I thought you were Eve's grandma (I think I heard sharp intakes of breath from budgies & owners alike... ). Oh, NO-O-O!!! Not The Beak!! OUCH!! Monty, I'm sorry, I really am.... Monty says I'm forgiven but I've got to watch my beak from now on - or else it'll be The Beak AND The Claw...

I had a hip repacement 4 years ago and it's the best thing I ever did. When I had the first x-ray I found out I have OA in my spine, and the wear and tear was worse than my hip was, but strangely very little pain.

Yes, a lady at work in her 40s was telling me the same thing. My GP said I'd need a replacement eventually so my fears aren't as bad as they were about it hearing how good the results are. Sorry to hear about the OA in your spine, it's not easy to cope with anywhere. The more I learn about it the more I realise how much people suffer with it. A few weeks ago I read that OA affects everything including the eyes. I must admit to fearing the future getting older.

Marianne Marlow, I'm sorry I wasn't looking at you in the pic but the enchanting Eve. Isn't she growing fast?! And she's a ringer for you - same eyes, smile. I get a mental impression of people which can be wide of the mark. I'd say you were ... late 20s?

I would never have known if I hadn't seen it on the XRay.

Such a great picture of you and Eve Marianne Marlow, no doubt she's your daughter! I feel your pain @cal. With my severe scoliosis I'm putting a lot of unnatural wear and tear on my left hip joint.

She is growing fast. She's just over 18 months now. I'm actually 45 in a couple of months, no way do I look in my late 20's but thanks, ha ha. I am old enough to be a grandmother I guess.
