Those of you with a Hamberley cage or similar that has a grate at the bottom, if you remove the grate what have you done to block the gap between the bars and the tray?

Sorry @sillycat84, I don't really understand what you mean, if I remove the grate the black tray is in place, there isn't a gap that I can see.
Any chance of a picture to let me see what you mean.

jellybeanThe tray doesn’t fit on the bars that the grate fits on, so if I remove it I’d have all that space between the bars and the tray, which would be big enough for the budgies to get out through.

Put the tray below where it is now, then put the grill where the tray is.
You will just have to push the black tray in a little until it slots in place.

Thanks jellybean . I'll give that a try. Although it sounds like everything will end up further from the bars. But we'll see. Nah, the tray doesn't fit anywhere except where it is already. If I take the grate out I get this. (Not that these two are likely to attempt an escape, but still) It's just a bit of a pain to clean.

jellybean I meant if the grill was taken out there would be a gap. You solve the problem by putting the paper on top of the grill, I see. I think I will start following your example there.

@sillycat84, the paper I buy for the Hamberley is 20 x 30 the exact same size as the grill on the cage.
All I do is put paper on top of the grill, pull the grill out so far, lift out the soiled top sheet, and Voila, you then have a clean top sheet, EASY 😂

@sillycat84 I have that problem with my Liberta Oregon. I wanted a padded bottom so laid the padding & paper on top of the grill but it's then too thick to slide out which means removing the paper through the main door. Bit of a pain, to be honest.
Anyway, on the other Oregon (I have 2) I made a 'cover' that ties to the bars, covering the gap, so I could pad the tray itself & slide out for easy cleaning. I had planned to do the same for the other cage but it was quite complicated so I've been putting it off!
Why don't cage designers think of these things!

Clearly they think having a grate to walk on is superior. I guess it means the cage still has a bottom when you slide the tray out, but then they could just have bars under the tray instead.

If you have newspaper at your disposal (I know not everyone does these days) it is so easy to put layers of paper down and lift one off each day. I can't remember the last time I had to clean a grate. Seven layers of paper down (eight actually, as one sheet is not strong enough at the end of the week), end of week is cleaning day and then another lot go down. I've only ever taken the paper out through the doors, budgies are so used to it they don't even blink any more.

I've been putting layers of newspaper down (my grandparents save them for me), just in the tray rather than on the grate. I always used to remove paper through the door with my old cages. That's a good idea, skysmum!
