How much water do they need to sprout? Where do you put them to sprout them?

How much water do they need to sprout? Where do you put them to sprout them? I soak them for abut 12 hours, then put them in a dark cupboard in a sealed plastic container. They go crazy, and the longer they are in there the longer the sprouts. Unfortunately BertieB doesn't appreciate my efforts.

I'm pretty sure everyone around here would already know this.. still, I guess the key to getting your birdie eat new food is to be consistent with it and try different ways they might like it.. My birdies like Mung half boiled or sprouted but with the green cover on.. whereas for brown/white chickpea, I found out that I have to remove the outer cover and split it into two. Few others, they don't like the seed part but they like the sprouted part. Few they like half cooked rather sprouted! You might have to try different ways, in which they might like it. I tricked them into tasting and eating by mixing their favorite seeds and veggies in the sprout mix initially, so while searching for the seeds they accidentally tasted a few sprouts and went crazy after it. If nothing works for a very long time, then I would say they might not like the taste of it, just like we don't like some healthy food 🙈

Sure, tweetiepiesmom. I will post their pic, once I am successful with the grass food for them! I found an old video of Breezie trying out Mung beans... They have a radio on for them most of the time, as Breezie loves chatting to it.. 🙈 Ignore the noise in the background

mona I love that video. Breezie certainly seems to be enjoying the sprouts. @sillycat84 I soak my seeds for 12 hours. I put them in water before I go to bed and then the next morning I drain them. I then rinse them, drain, shake off excess water and put them in a container with cheesecloth on top just to keep out dust. I leave mine on the kitchen counter but not in direct sunlight. I rinse and shake off excess water every 12 hours and take out a few to feed (or try to) when they get a stage that looks good. I'll soak about 2 Tbl at a time which gives me enough to try to feed them plus still have some to continue growing. The ones I tried on them yesterday had a bit more of a tail and neither seemed interested.

I managed to get some seeds sprouting and put them in the cage. They only had a tiny sprout appearing. I had to put unsprouted seed in the bowl too to encourage them as the sprouted seed was still damp and therefore looked and behaved differently.
I might try again and try to time it so that I can put the sprouted seeds on a dish to dry overnight.

Your buds look very happy to have such a rich and varied plateful there, mona! I've managed to grow some grass from their seeds. I don't know why I haven't been doing this all along. I am going to leave the pot within view for a bit before moving it closer to the boys.

Your birdies are in for such a treat and you'll love watching them eat it birdguhl! I end up cutting some grass off, tying it with a ribbon and clipping it to their cage since my guys are not into exploring outside their cage. Buddy has been eating my sprouts regularly now. I'm growing them until they get a good tail on them. I did exactly what you described @sillycat84 until Buddy ate and then grew the sprouts a bit longer until they looked like real sprouts. Buddy seems to really like it. Now, if only Tweetie Pie would eat them.

Ira, it is a good idea to dry germinated seeds at first to reduce the differentness of them - could do this on (ideally) unbleached kitchen towel or unbleached coffee filter

I'm currently attempting to sprout some between layers of wet kitchen towel, so hopefully they won't take as long to dry.

I sprout about 2 Tbl seeds at a time. I store what I don't feed my guys in the fridge. I pull some out and spread them on a plate to come to room temperature. I find that they do dry out some during that half hour or so and then they are not wet, just "damp". I also shake off any excess water before I put them in the fridge.
Yesterday I gave them their freeze dried chop instead of the sprouts and they didn't eat it. Guess they've gotten the taste for sprouts now, or Buddy has. Still waiting for Tweetie Pie to eat them. Today they'll get the sprouts.

Sprouts for me not the buds - Clockwise starting with red dish: green lentils shoots - will snip greens for adding to pasta fenugreek - to add to my celery soup sesame - still soaking for adding to muesli pumpkin seeds - as above alfalfa - a bit overgrown and might have to go out now

I love it birdguhl! I have been buying "microgreens" at the grocery store to add to my salads. Basically they are just sprouts that have the first little green leaves come out. I thought once I really knew what I was doing, I'd start growing my own.
