It has taken me a while to sit at the computer and think what to type. My heart is heavy at losing my two little cheeky boys.
Henry and Quentin were in an unexpected clutch that hatched in October 2017, the 24th and 25th respectively. There were four babies altogether: two girls and two boys.
From the offset Henry and Quentin were best friends, inseparable - they were so cute. Playing together, preening, eating - whatever one was doing the other was there too.
Henry hatched a day before Quentin, when he grew feather they were a gorgeous blue. He was brave from a young age, first to stick his head out the nest box even though he wasn't the eldest, the first waltzing around the cage, first to stay out the nest box and inside an upside down tissue box for the night. He led the way really for them all - I always thought of him as a fearless braun.
Quentin was the clever one, he would think things through. When I would weigh them he'd fly about and land on my hand, Henry would flap about and end up tangled in my hair. They were different characters, both with so many endearing qualities. Quentin was a bright green - so lovely. As time went by and they grew, Quentin started wanting to spend time with Cora, his elder sister.
So Quentin became attached to his sister, she became his new 'Henry'; Henry was fine, he found a peg to be his new girlfriend and became quite obsessed by this particular peg.
Mabel who occasionally spent time inside became a favourite of Henrys. He was first to fly into her cage when it was free flying time, bless him. I remember it so well.
When the time came to go into the aviary they all flew in like they owned the place. The flock didn't know what they had let themselves in for. Henry made a beeline for Mabel, she wasn't interested not that it stopped him. One day the beautiful lutino Rita caught his eye - that was it - he never looked at another Hen again. He followed Rita around for weeks until she finally gave in and paired up with him. Henry was happy, he has a real girlfriend, someone to spend time with, someone to preen and someone to feed.
Quentin stayed with Cora for a while, then changed his mind and decided he wanted to be with Agatha. The fact Agatha had been with Ralph for 6 years didn't seem to bother him, and Ralph is so chilled that he shared Agatha with Quentin. Before long he decided he wanted two girlfriends; so he wooed Cecile. Every time they were together they got up to naughty time. It is all they ever did. It is no surprise that eventually Cecile took precedence over Agatha and was Quentin's No. 1.
Henry stayed with Rita until she passed from Ovarian Cancer. He looked after her inside in a cage, he was so loving. Weeks after he paired up with Sue, another lutino who happened to be the half exhibition and also the biggest bird I have ever had. Henry was small, and the sight of them both together with Henry cuddled up under Sue was a joy to see. They were very happy, always together, Henry would wait for Sue to go out in a morning, and wait for her to come in and night and they always, always slept next to each other so they were cuddled together. Sue passed a couple of months ago and Henry has been lost ever since. He'd fly about, play a bit and sing but he wasn't the same. He missed Sue. For the past couple of years I have not rehomed any more budgies as the pain of losing them is so great. But, for Henry, because of my love for him and I could see how lost he was I did look at the RSPCA to see if there were any hens that needed a home. I just wanted him happy.
Quentin lost Cecile to cancer, but he wasn't wired the same as Henry. He moved straight onto Bridgette much to Rupert's annoyance. Many a time the two boys would be bickering over her. Quentin never backed down, he wanted Bridgette and that was that.
Quentin was always the loudest of the flock. Whenever I would walk over and watch them he would fly over to me and do some sort of howling, tweeting, high pitched song. Always made me laugh.
Henry remained brave until the end. If I was inside filling up the seed he'd fly over and clamber on my hand, no fear at all of anything.
Henry showed signs of being ill first, he was rasping - he had a respiratory infection. Quentin showed signs the day after. Both had antibiotics but no matter how hard I tried, how much I loved them I just couldn't save them.
Henry passed in his cage on the 29th September, I came home to find him on the bottom of the cage with Quentin looking down at him. Quentin held on until the 5th October when I decided he was not having a quality of life he should have and that he was in pain and struggling. I made a vet appt and finished work early, I held him before going to the vet and he passed. It was horrendous.
My two little boys, I regret how your lives ended, and I regret that you suffered at the end. You should have had years of happiness ahead of you, you were taken from me too soon, it is very unfair. I dearly wish you are with your sisters and previous loves at rainbow bridge and living life as you did here, to the max. Rest in peace my darlings xx
