Perches done, cleaning complete, and the new set up (for this week) is go. The perches are fiddly enough to put in that I don't think there will be any set choice of arrangements, because the perches just end up roughly wherever they will. But considering that I nearly always drop a washer or wingnut when affixing perches these are really simple.

Thanks willowsmum! Once I get a feel for the possible angles I might trim the ends of the perches because they make putting the cover on a challenge. But the pair of them seem to be flying about in the cage more so I'm happy.

That's the exact same reason I don't like the ends sticking out the cage @sillycat84.

Ah, didn't think of that @sillycat84 and jellybean. I don't cover Willow's cage so that hadn't crossed my mind, sorry! We move his cage around between 3 different rooms during the day and every so often one of the 'sticky-out' branches catches on a doorframe so they aren't problem free even without a cover to consider

willowsmum If I had a room of their own I could put them in at their bedtime that had good curtains then I might not cover them. It's just a little extra hassle. jellybean Pretty sure I'll be trimming these. There's only so far the extra couple of inches either end will let them reach.

That Etsy shop is a bit yummy, @sillycat84! You're doing good work there - the buds will love it. Talking of whittling, I went to a spoon carving workshop a couple of years ago and came home with this. Fairly 'rustic' but I was pleased with my first effort. Although we were encouraged lots of times to change the whittling action to avoid strain to joints, I persisted too much with one and bothered my wrist a bit. I've since developed elbow and shoulder problems, due to other activities, so haven't been able to hone my spooning skills - hopefully will be able to do more in future. I also have this book...

Love the spoon birdguhl. That's a lot of work to produce that from the raw branch! The wooden birds are gorgeous too, so delicate - they would be lovely to have a go at in the future.

Thanks, willowsmum! I would love to do more woodwork like this. We have family history on this score. Both my grandfathers were woodworkers. My Mum's Dad made these when he had retired. There are lots of churches around where he worked. Letter opener From solid piece of oak - he did lots of birds (but no budgies to my knowledge!) Detail from much used breadboard - which is also now in retirement - topical in view of discussion about mice!

birdguhl Your spoon and your grandfather's works are beautiful! ❤ I might need to get some shorter pieces of branch from their for the Vision in time for its occupant. Unless I find anything nice at my grandparents' when I go looking for a nice piece of apple tree to acquire for a playstand.

Love your branches @sillycat84 - two lucky little budgies to have a fun new set up. Wood carving does run in your family birdguhl - beautiful work. I'm such a klutz at times, I'd be afraid I'd carve a finger off!

birdguhl, those are treasures to be ... well, treasured. I love things like that, and a bit of history only make them better. @sillycat84, I just throw a sheet over the cage, if I'm covering one up; is yours a fitted cover? I love the flexibility that having the perches moveable and long enough to fit most places for the (small) disadvantage of the outside ends to be easy to put up with.

Hezz Sort of. It's a bit bigger, but is shaped. None of my large enough sheets are dark enough. I'm not going to trim them until I've tested them a bit more. If they're on an angle the perch slides down until it gets too thick for the bars on the lower end, which means I only have a couple of spare inches to play with on the upper end, which is only helpful in one or two places. So the spare length only really allows me extra for horizontal diagonals.
