This might sound like a silly question, but I've bought a large rug for the centre of my lounge.
I've put it in the spare room for a few days to air out, but I have no idea if it would be harmful to a budgie.
Any ideas whether it would contain any fumes? It doesn't smell except of carpet.

I think it depends on what the carpet is made from. Wool carpets will be just fine. Sometimes in the US they treat them with a fire retardant which I'd be tempted to wash out if my budgies ran around on the floor. Other synthetic fibers such as nylon can "off gas" for a bit which wouldn't be good for the budgies. You can help that by giving it a good rug shampoo. Otherwise, just leave it until you can't smell it anymore. The off gassing will be worse when its first unrolled because all those fumes have been captured in the rug and wrapping. Its always exciting to get new furnishings!

Thanks tweetiepiesmom I'm glad I asked. It's not wool, and it's multicoloured so I don't want to shampoo it. Now I have a word "off gas", I've been able to search on the internet and they say the first 2-3 days is the worse so I'll leave it in the spare room for a week and then rethink. Hopefully the fumes will be gone by then.

No loose fibres ffiscool. It's short pile. I did lay it down (it looks lovely) then when I noticed it smelt very 'carpety' I took it up again. I did a quick search but all I could find was about the glue sometimes used by carpet fitters. Then I knew I had to ask here

The smell from carpets made from synthetic fibers is a result of the manufacturing process used to make the fibers plus the chemicals used to treat the fibers and color them. Also chemicals such as fire retardants are sometimes used. Manufacturers are all good about "drying" the carpets to get the residual chemicals out because they know people, particularly babies will be crawling on them. As you noticed there is a "smell" still but that comes out fairly quickly once you've rolled it out in your house. The only glue would be if they were installing wall to wall carpet. It sounds like you've got a cheerful carpet and I hope you and everyone who sees it enjoys it and it makes them happy.

This is it, catalogue photo. Although it's described as Aztec, it goes very well with the rest of my décor, which is vaguely Moroccan. It's lovely, but not lovely enough to poison my budgie, so it's still taking time out in the spare bedroom

It is beautiful and cheerful! It is similar to a style here called "Southwestern" which is Indian (American Indian) inspired. I hope you love it for many more years.
