Charlie who is two in February has just not been himself for a couple of weeks now.. He is eating and drinking well and his droppings are normal. He has been wanting to come out of his cage to play but doesn’t want to stay out for long. I haven’t seen him playing with his toys much either. He had a very light moult and I was thinking it was that... Yesterday although he had been out and playing on the top of his cage, I noticed in the afternoon he was very quiet and he is the same today.....mainly sitting on his perch in the corner of his cage... I have seen him eat and I have put guardian angle in his water, but I am really worried....He isn’t wheezy.......We don’t have an avian vet and our normal vet is just doing telephone calls.......I have covered the corner of his cage where he is perching and don’t know what else I can do???

What's the weather like where you are ladybird? When the weather here is dull and drab, my two are always less active, it is just a thought. Could another member who lives near to where you are put you in touch with an Avian vet? A moult really does knock the stuffing out of them sometimes, if he is eating and drinking, I don't think I'd be too concerned. You could put a hot water bottle on top of his cage to keep in some warmth. I really hope it's just the moult that's made him a little under the weather. Sending lots of love to you Charlie 😘

Does he have any symptoms other than being quiet?

No he doesn’t have any other symptoms at all, just sitting hunched over a bit. He is usually very talkative and just silent now. He has just had some seed and and a drink of guardian angle and now gone back into the covered corner.... Jellybean our nearest avian vet is about 30 miles away......plus we are in very high risk COVID area. The weather has been good and I always take him into the conservatory with me when it’s sunny.( his cage is in shade) he loves it in there.....I haven’t moved his cage today he is in the lounge with us where it’s warm......should I still put a little hot water bottle on top of his cage..... He looks very forlorn I just want to help him 😥

I really hope Charlie picks up ladybird. My nearest avian vet is quite a way from me too, on the other side of Leicester and I hate driving on motorways! The vet near me is a bird lover and is very helpful for general queries and I'm lucky to have a friend who is a breeder. He put a spot on Ivermectin on BertieB's neck a few weeks ago when he was a bit off (he routinely does his birds every 6 months) and a couple of days later Bertie was fine. I'm not suggesting you do that, it was probably coincidence.

Poor little guy - I'm hoping he perks up quickly.

Thank you Blue and tweetiepiesmom .....I phoned the breeder .and he has also said to keep Charlie warm and keep up with the guardian angle and if he is no better in a couple of days to phone him again, He is probably as knowledgeable as an ordinary vet when it comes to budgies. Things are difficult at the moment as we are not allowed in each other’s houses........Charlie has been talking a little bit this afternoon and I am keeping him warm and his corner covered...... I am sure to have a sleepless nigh, I worry so much over my little bud, as we all do on here......just wish he could tell me what’s wrong🙁

I hope he perks up a bit more.. the fact he is eating and drinking though is encouraging
I think you are doing the right thing having him with you, warm..
hopefully it is something and nothing

Poor Charlie. Sorry to hear he's so out of sorts. It would be so much easier if our buds could tell us what's wrong. I hope you manage to get some rest ladybird and that Charlie is feeling better tomorrow.

If you have a patch of sun in the conservatory, set him up so that one end is in the sun. He can then sit and warm up as he needs, making sure he doesn't over-heat of course and there is always some shade at one end for him. If you can get him into the sun without glass, even better.

Thank you everyone and yes Hezz I will let part of his cage into the sun and with door open ( weather permitting ) but it is getting cold here now..... He is a bit more chatty this morning and there are a few more feathers on the cage floor. Hopefully this is what is making him so off colour....... Just wondering can a moult make them off colour for a week or so before they moult as well as after? Sorry for being such a worrier 🙁

ladybird Cookie becomes very dull during a moult. She is very active & running, shredding all other times. During a moult, she just keeps sleeping most of the day. I usually cover half the cage.. so that if she wants to sleep she can. On the other end, during winters or monsoon, I use a bulb hung probably 6 to 8 inches above the cage, with a thin cloth at that end. If she feels so, she runs to that end to absorb some heat. I keep the radio low volume at those times. Keep the food close to her. As suggested by everyone, I would be trying commercial egg food during moult & probably before that to help them get used to it. During moult, she does a bit of tail bobbing too that scares me all the time. I hope that's the same case with Charlie. Sending him loads of love...

Not to be a scaremonger, but I've always thought that Charlie is bordering on the overly-long feathered, almost 'feather-duster' side of budgie normalities. This is a genetic fault that has the birds' feathers not stop growing so the birds are constantly needing extra nutrients to keep them in good condition. They are often short-lived because of this. Obviously Charlie is not at this extreme, but if he is requiring extra protein, even through a small normal moult, and not getting it, it could well see him under the weather for a few weeks during this time.

He does have a lot of feather to him.
Like Hezz says, some more protein at this time may help him. a hard boiled egg, grated - you can sprinkle some guardian angel on this too.
