blue48 I really think that getting them to try new things is trial and error - for example, with carrot: I grate it and serve it on a plate, they ignore it. But if I peg little circles of it about the place, they shred the lot. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to serve carrot, beyond stuffing grated bits into lattice balls to be pulled out.

I served up some carrot tops to BertieB this morning and he dived in like a bird who has been starved his entire life. He loved them! He's never tried them before as I usually buy carrots with no tops.

Good on Bertie. I tried with carrot tops a couple of times, managed to wrangle some off a market-stall owner who saved them for someone's guinea pigs, the buds turned their beaks up as though to say "it looks like grass but where are the seed heads?"

All your hard work with the various fresh food offerings paid off blue48. Bertie B was just waiting for you to hit on the right one

Actually Hezz, I did think it looked like grass when I pegged it up. I washed it first and hung it up dripping so he got a bath at the same time.

Marianne Marlow - I clip seaweed inside the cage at all times, just like an iodine block. I get mine from an Asian market, if you happen to p have one nearby-ish. tweetiepiesmom - although it is slightly salty, they don’t eat very much of it, and sometimes just shred it for fun instead of eating it at all (oh well). @sillycat84 - have you tried using a carrot peeler to peel thick slices of carrot and clipping them up like that? Mine like it best that way - especially long dangling pieces seem to be the most interesting/fun/tasty

Morgan I have. Yuki occasionally deigns to touch it with his beak. Thus far his favourite is grated and stuffed into something so he can pull it out.

From time to time I tell my guys that food is to be eaten and not played with and they should eat their veggies and play with their toys. I tell them that there are plenty of places in the world with wild fires and other weather conditions making food hard to find for birds and other wildlife. Buddy looks at me as if to say "Go ahead, mom and send this food to them". Just kidding. Anything that makes our little buds eat some more veggies I'm in favor of.
