Ever since soon after the Covid Pandemic began in mid-March, all 4 of the local petshops in my county, which normally stock young budgies for sale, have been out of them, and haven't been able to get any new stock in. When I go in to buy my cagebird supplies, I enjoy looking over the new young birds that are for sale, but for several months now, they haven't received any. The salesclerks say that it's been that way ever since the Pandemic started, and they don't know when they'll get any new stock in. They've never before been without a regular stock of young budgerigars for sale. I wonder if anyone else has been experiencing that where you live ?

Frankly moe I haven't been in the local pet stores and looked because the temptation to buy one would be too great! I have a couple chain pet stores near me and one that is owned and run by a woman who breeds a few (very few) budgies and lovebirds and has a few other breeds available. Ever since I found her store, I go there for my bird supplies. She buys budgies from other breeders to sell so she never has a lot of them. She has fewer than normal. She said not as many people are coming in to buy and the breeders are staying home just like everybody else.

No moe that's not been a problem as far as I have seen. I bought Kevin in April as I am working from home and could spend time with each of my buds while he was in quarantine. I've not been back to the shop, but they run an advert and the budgie pic constantly changes. The shop specialises in birds though, so they may have a larger pool of breeders.

I got my new budgie from the pet shop last Saturday 31st. I originally wanted a male budgie, but there was only one female left for sale. She looked so lonely, as the other budgies had been bought five days before. The pet shop owner said because of the lock down happening he wouldn't be getting anymore budgies. The thought of her being all on her own over the month lock down was too much for me. She now at home in a nice large cage.

So sweet of you summerbird. I know she will be happy with you. I'll look to see if you've posted a picture of her and what you've named her.

Same thing is happening in my area in California. I have about local 4 shops around me and whenever they do get like 20-30 new budgies from breeders they're bought within the first few days. They have waiting lists on budgies now and the price went up which blew my mind. the chains around me are out and have been put since it all started too.

One of the few silver linings in this pandemic is that dog shelters and rescue centers are empty. People are buying and adopting pets of all kinds.

There were 2 budgies in my preferred pet store this morning, in fact I almost crumbled in my resolve to not get a second bud. I looked closely (like you do) and noticed the blue budgie was fluffed up and sitting in the seed pot at the bottom of the cage. The other one which I can only describe as a dirty yellow colour (sorry bud) looked fine, but as the other looked unwell it made my mind up for me to leave empty handed apart from the millet I went in for.

In Northern California everything has been pretty much normal. There was one week the local shop I go to didn’t have buds but the next they were in again. But then again the shop owner breeds them himself. I’d be glad if the chains ran out... That’s a shame about the unhappy blue bud at your preferred shop though blue48. Better not to chance it though. I’ve gone into the petco here just out of curiosity and for practice identifying genders (yes, really xD) and twice I had to inform an employee of a not quite sick, but not generally happy bud. One had an overgrown beak and the other looked too young to have been taken yet from its parents. :/ I don’t go anymore...

I did have a word with the staff Morgan and they said the budgies were being monitored. Maybe I just caught them at a bad moment. The shop is normally very good about the welfare of the animals and birds in their care unlike the other pet shop in town.

So now I have to go to a pet shop that has budgies that are normally sick.
