Those of you who give your budgies chop, how many tsp do they each need per day?
Thinking of making chop for the sake of vegetable variety and still giving them chunks to shred, but with the chunks I always tend to buy the same things. Also handy if I happen to run out between shops.
It'll only be on days I'm at home though as I'll need to be able to remove any spoiled food, so I'm trying to work out how much to keep in the fridge at any one time.

Many people who do chop will freeze portions, @sillycat84, using ice cube trays. I imagine that would be the larger sized ones, so that might give you some idea of volume. Why not just see how much they want, rather than what you think they want?

That's a fair point, Hezz. For a while they'll probably want none. It'll be worth a try anyway, on the off chance they get some more variety in their diet.

jellybean I have combined carrot, broccoli, baby corn, various leaves that they're allowed which is the main thing I don't tend to buy to use myself, and a few other bits and bobs, and some egg biscuit to help dry it out. And all I can say is I hope they eat it because there's an awful lot. If they do, I at least have a better idea of how much of each thing to mix together next time. I might be mining into the tubs if it freezes into a solid block. If they don't like it then ah well it kept me busy for most of the day buying and preparing the ingredients. I know the budgie who should be coming tomorrow has had chop, so that one might know what to do with it at least.

@sillycat84 I had a discussion with my vet about trying to get Tweetie Pie to eat fresh foods - this was before I got Buddy. The vet said most people have a tendency to just give them a little until they discovered what they'll eat. She said that was the wrong approach. They can ignore "a little" so she said give them an amount that they can't ignore.

Interesting, TPM... Pretty sure they'd ignore any amount if they didn't see it as either food or a toy though.

@sillycat84. Did you make the chop for the boys?
Did they like it?

jellybean I did. They eat any sprouted seed I mix with it. No idea if they're eating the chop itself though. Even Munchy, who's had chop before, is only really interested in chunks of veg. I have determined that giving them chop and sprouted seed for part of the day on weekends when I'm working may not be an option because apparently I can't trust OH to remember to remove it and give them their dry seed. 😒
