Hi All, I want to introduce Fred (blue) and Monty (white). They are 8 and a half weeks old and came home with me on 25th Nov so this is their 5th day in their new home. The first 24 hours they were very still, very quiet and barely ate anything but they have come on leaps and bounds and now love their seed and have had spinach, carrot, kale and broccoli and I've given them a little bit of millet so they know what it is (I want to use it to tame them!) They seem to have really bonded and often stand so close and right now they are preening each other - it's the cutest thing to watch! The only time they bicker is when one is at the food and the other decided they want to eat as well the funny thing is there are two food containers but they often seem to want the same one haha! Yesterday I started putting my hand in the cage holding a piece of millet, they both flew to the other perch and I kept my hand where it was and looked away from them but kept talking in a soothing tone - I was thinking if I keep doing that I will get them used to my hand. Then last night I watched some Youtube videos on taming budgies and one person said don't put your hand in the cage as that's the bird's safe place and instead open the door and hold a spray of millet near the birds and over time shorten it so they get closer to your hand. So today I am not sure what to do for the best! Right now I am sat near the cage on my laptop and the tv is on and they are both chewing on their perches

Welcome karen101 and Fred and Monty! Sounds like you have got off to a great start - your buds look gorgeous. I have started by putting my hand at the door and gradually moved it inside as they seem more relaxed with this. You can also feed millet thru the bars at first so the buds learn hands mean treats. There is a lot of info and chat here you can read up on for other ideas. New budgie threads are very numerous! Let us know how you’re getting on.

Aw thank you birdguhl That is interesting what is working for you.....I think this evening I will give them some millet through the bars and hopefully they'll soon figure out my hands mean tasty treats! There is brilliant info on here, I will definitely keep reading and I'll keep you posted

Go along with putting your hand in their cage but you know how to be respectful of their space and not frighten them too much. One will be more bold than the other and that is the bird who you can target to be first taster. If they only move away from you when you do so, that's okay. If they panic and fly around madly banging into the sides of the cage, definitely stop and instead offer the millet through the bars for a short time. Personally, I think Ytube vids should be avoided. I'm sure there are some that are good, but anyone can post a video and so much of the info is just plain wrong. Not put your hand in the cage?? How are you then going to do any changing or refreshing if they don't get used to you coming and going?? That doesn't make any sense to me. If you are needing answers to specific questions, don't be afraid to reach out. We have all had to start somewhere and go through the same thing, sometimes too much information can be almost as bad as too little. And congratulations! I'm sure Fred and Monty will bring you a lot of joy.

Hello Fred and Monty! I think putting your hand in the cage is fine as long as you don’t chase them around. You could maybe say something, I say “knock knock!”, before you open their door to clean, etc. They should catch on to the meaning pretty quickly and then will know what is about to happen. Just go slow and at their pace and I’m sure you will be fine! Keep reading through the forum and asking questions too!

Thank you Hezz that is a brilliant point you make, how will they get used to my hand if I never put it near them! On the whole they've moved away from my hand but I've kept it by whichever perch I put my hand near and talked soothingly, blinked slowly and looked away from them so hopefully they don't feel too threatened. I am going to go back to doing that whilst holding millet. If they really flap I'll stop and try again later. Thanks so much for the advice. You are completely right, I have felt a bit overwhelmed by all the info and end up not sure what to do for the best. And thank you, I will definitely be back I am sure! :-) Morgan Fred and Monty say hello I love that, I will definitely start saying 'knock knock' when I open the cage door. You are right, I need to remember gaining their trust will take take, I keep telling myself that I am huge compared to them and they would be silly to trust me without me earning their trust! willowsmum Fred and Monty say thank you so much You are spot on, this forum has helped me so much, from decided what cage to get, to what to feed them and now how to make friends! I don't know what I'd do without it!

jellybean and blue48 Fred and Monty say hello and they are doing good. I am loving watching them, they have definitely bonded, I love watching them preen each other and when they have a nap they stand right next to each other - I find it adorable! The only time they bicker is when they both try to go to the seed container (there are 3 seed containers in the cage yet they go to the same one sometimes) and they chirp at each other and I swear in budgie language they say "get off" "no you get off" but I like that one of them always climbs across the bars to the other nearest container and then they are best of friends again! I'll have to get some more photos for you all :-)
