I've been trying to get Tony to accept pellets as part of his diet again after a few months when they have been off the menu due to Charlie needing to put on weight. I find they always go off them when there's illness around but this has been the longest hiatus and Tony has gained too much weight having dry seeds more available.
Ollie took to eating them remarkably quickly during quarantine. I just mixed them in with dry seed and noticed that almost immediately he was eating them in amongst the seed.
Over the last week or so I have seen Tony approach the pellet dish that used to have dry seed and then retreat in disgust when he saw what was in it. And this is after years of routinely eating them.
But this morning, Ollie was tucking in and I saw Tony notice and then perk up and decide that he couldn't let that young upstart get all the pellets and he was straight over and had a good amount.
Result!!!

That fear of missing out can be a wonderful motivator.

Back to pellets, my middle aged gents have decided that when She-who-doesn't-feed-us-enough only delivers a teaspoon of seed each day ( along with a truck-load of fresh grass) and all the seeds have gone, it might be worth trying those horrid looking little brown nuggets that look like something from a cockroach's backside. They would probably tell me that they taste like it as well! They have to forage through the pellets to get to the seed - I was trying different things to slow down their seed consumption.

Tony has had a rather grumpy week. Maybe that new noise is his way of letting me know he's feeling got at! And not just because there have been no dry seeds available - there is Ollie who is determined to try to cheer him up!
A couple of times I have had to chase Tony out of Charlie's cage where I put a mix of dry seeds and pellets as well as some germinated seed at night. If I forget to close the door on Charlie, Tony is straight in there seeing what he can pilfer.
After the initial success of Ollie piquing Tony's interest in the pellets, I didn't see him eating any more.
So I went back to basics and started grinding up the pellets and mixing them with their germinated seeds. This is how I have started all of mine on pellets. They have all been tucking in to this gloop quite happily. And Ollie has continued eating dry pellets from a dish with only these even when soaked seeds are available.
Then - just this evening - I saw Tony eating from the pellet dish! Yay!
I will now gradually cut back on the generous amount of germinated seeds that had been available.
The sight of Tony panting after a circuit of the room, and taking wider loops to gain height has been strengthening my determination.
