Hey guys,
I'm fairly new to parakeets and I got one 4 months ago. Haven't been active with her in the beginning but for the past month and a half I take her in my home office and we spent at least 8 hours together in the same small room with often talking and ocasional singing. I've seen progress as she now actually gets out if her cage on her own (the cage is always open while in the office) . However yhere are few things I dont understand.. So here it is.
She is not afraid to eat off my hand at all.. She will eat seeds and some vegies and she does that on her own. What confuses me ia she never eats vegies if I leave them in her cage.
Another thing is that she is quite often not interested in anything.. Does not respond to my calls or offering of food. There have been ocasions when I've literally put some food infront/on her beak and she just ignores.
Last but not least... She sometimes willingly perches on my finger, but she bites... Infact, ahe tries to eat my fingers. I tried to record a video so you can see how it looks. Not sure she is scared cuz she comes on her own.. Any advices are welcome.

Oh, and I forgot to mention.. When she eats my hand.. It hurts. It's not just a playful or exploratory nibbling

Don't allow her to bite at your hand. By just allowing her to chew on you, you are basically telling her that it is okay for her to do so. Tell her off when she does, tell her 'no biting' when she comes to you, cack at her when she starts to and move your hand slightly so that she has to stop to regain her balance. Plenty of praise when she is just sitting and not biting. This is typical budgie behaviour, but from your video it is simply her using her beak to do what it is supposed to do, there is nothing mean or nasty in intent. She is just exploring, but as you wouldn't let a pup scratch or bite you purposefully, so you don't encourage it in your budgie either.
I think we tend to forget that budgies are only small birds and their food requirements aren't huge, especially our caged pets. She can only eat so much in a day - about the size of her own head basically. Maybe the eating of her veg in the cage will come with time. Be grateful that she is eating them at all; some people have a terrible time getting theirs to eat anything fresh.
