He did the same thing again today. My daughter saw him flying out but didn't know where he went. we looked around and he flew off a tree onto the roof. Being me, I went up like last time, he flew quite far but again in the neighbours house. gate was open again and he was tired so caught him easily. I had carelessly left the cage door open and he flew out the window. I have a headache now I think because of all the commotion.

You are lucky to be able to rescue him twice.. he didn't went far away and there's predator attacks too (as I have heard other pet birdie stories). It could also result into fatal injury for the birdie when they crash into something and fall. These experiences are pretty traumatic for the birdies..
You should be more careful about the window and the cage door both.. and even the room door.
We don't have a mosquito net at our new place. So we have got a bunch of mosquito net and will fit it there.
I think with their escape twice from the window and being drenched in the rain water once, you should avoid opening the window until the time you can remember all the details. I normally double check the cage door, when I don't want them to come out of the cage.
Sometimes, when I feel the need, I add a reminder to my calendar or alarm on my phone. Adding notes and alarms wouldn't work even then, if we aren't careful.

He has been lucky you managed to get him back, twice.
Please be extra careful, I doubt you will always be that lucky, which would be traumatic for you both
You really need to leave notes, as I’ve suggested before. Please do not open that window until you can sort something over the window or you can be sure that you can be more careful

Now that you know, given the opportunity he's going right out that window, can you get some netting material and tack it up around the window so you can open the window to enjoy the fresh cool air while keeping him safe?
