Quite a while back we got some mixed balsa blocks from Karen at The Natural Bird Co. The middle of last week, as I was cleaning up, I found a very unusual blue-green poop. It was the kind that didn't look as if anything could be naturally wrong, and was soon traced to the chewed piece of blue balsa that was hanging off a mirror in the cage. The blue poos went on for a few days until the balsa was chewed enough to fall to the floor of the cage. I just left it there then, intending to remove it when I changed the paper the next morning. Only, Munchy decided that he wasn't done chewing it and when he woke up the next morning went to shred it some more. I ended up picking him up to show him to OH and getting Munchy to open his beak to show OH his tongue. He looked like he'd been sucking a blue lollipop! It was very comical, but I think we might stick to undyed balsa in future.

Not sure that should have happened. I’d never seen that when I bought from Karen. Might be worth mentioning?

I've never seen that either @sillycat84, and I've had coloured balsa from Karen.

I'll email her and let her know. I know the colours run when wet, but he must have really been licking it. And it hasn't happened with any of the other coloured pieces we have, only that blue one.

When my budgies have had a go at red balsa from Karen, it has made their droppings red.
It's just vegetable dye and I doubt it would harm them.

Marianne Marlow I wasn't too worried as it was from Karen, I partly just wondered if they were eating it as there didn't seem to be much remaining below. At least the colour was so unnatural that I knew it wasn't from sickness!

So... Munchy has been busy wrecking a green and blue balsa toy these past few days.
No weird colouring around his mouth. No funny coloured droppings.
So either that other piece of balsa was very heavily dyed or had loose dye, or Munchy was actually consuming it. Don't know if he would do that out of stress as he was sharing a cage and competing for food at the time.
