...so different that these two are barely recognizable as budgies. The mutation is called Blackfaced Black Wing.

Do you know if this is one genetic mutation or a composite? Are blackface and blackwing two separate mutations? I’ve heard of both but not on one bird. That’s pretty crazy!

I have no idea and know little to nothing about this/these mutation(s). I recall there being a stir somewhere around 2000 when the blackface mutation --and what a terrible name for a budgie mutation-- first appeared. There were numerous articles about them. I believe it was thought to be simple recessive. I thought the strain subsequently died out. And now blackwing is a total new one on me.

I have only heard of Blackface. As said above by yellowfacedviolet, they don't look like budgies in the least!

yellowfacedviolet - I also thought blackface was a terrible name to give the mutation as well. There was an article I read recently on another forum that talks about the blackwing mutation, but I only recently heard about that one too. I would not have thought both these mutations could show up in one bird so quickly - but that is coming only from my own perspective of things! What do I know really other than what I can find online that has already been written about? There could be other crazy mutations out there right now that breeders are keeping quiet until they feel it’s safe to show them.
