Hello, this is my budgie, Sol. He is 8 weeks old and I just got him from a Breeder who says he is a boy, and I’m hoping he is because I have a female and I want them to get along when I eventually put them together. His cere is pink, and there is some dark purple starting to appear in the corners.

Thank you, I felt pretty confident that he’s a boy but I appreciate the reassurance. He’s got some boy behavior already too, he’s very vocal and today he shook his head for the first time.

Thank you all for the input. The breeder said that this mutations cere may not turn to a dark blue and that he may stay pink , but I’m not sure if that’s true or not, because i am already starting to notice some dark bluish purple appearing on the outside edge of the cere. Do you guys think he will go blue? At what age does this normally happen?

Hmm... if he was a recessive pied then it wouldn't change, but those blue patches are more suggestive of dominant pied, which would have a cere colour change.
Do you have any photos of him from behind?
It should start to change when he has his first moult, but it's been ages since I saw it so I can't recall. My one who's having his first moult is a recessive pied so won't change. I think Peri's was starting to change with his moult but I didn't see him finish it.
He's gorgeous, by the way.

Hm I’m not sure if he is recessive or dominant . He does have some nice patches of blue and green , almost like a rainbow mutation.

I have a dominant pied who is about a year now and his cere is still purple. It may turn blue eventually or it may not. Pieds are odd - sometimes the mutation affects the cere and sometimes it doesn’t. In Rec pieds the cere usually (I don’t know if always) stays pink though.
He looks to be a double factor dominant pied to me but you can post him up again under the mutations section to ask about his full mutation.

Hello again, sorry to bump an old thread but I was hoping to get some more opinion from you guys now that Sol’s cere has been changing, because I am having my doubts now that it’s been a couple of weeks. It is still what I would describe as pink, however it definitely has become far more pale as you can see in this picture But in different lighting from the same day it looks brighter pink like this But what really has me confused is the blue that is starting to come in around the outside edges and nares. Like in this picture , I’m not sure if it’s female light blue coming in or if he’s just starting to go blue! In person, depending on the lighting, his cere mostly resemble the last two pictures on this chart

He’s still a boy for sure. You would see obvious white rings around the nares if it were a young female.
Feel free to post more pictures though. What a cutie!

Thanks! He does have some lightness around his nares, but it’s light blue as opposed to straight up white, and it doesn’t go all the way around the nostrils, just on the inside . In this picture from last night it does look white, but maybe that’s from the artificial light as opposed to the pictures I posted from today which were in natural light

Also, this article Has been offering reassurance to me that he is a boy, because the pink color, but it also notes that some mutations including dominant pied may also have lighter nares. www.cutelittlebirdiesaviary.com/why-so-many-young-budgies-are-incorrectly-sexed.htmlI guess Part of the reason that I’m having doubts about it is because the color as a whole has become so faded at this point , as opposed to the deep pinkish purple it was in the pictures I originally posted. It wouldn’t be the end of the world if it turned out he was a hen, because I don’t intend to use him for breeding purposes, but part of me really wants him to be a boy!

He’s definitely a boy. Females will have WHITE around the nares. Light blue around the nares is just him transitioning (it will still be very slow most likely) to having a dark blue cere.
