I got my old bird cage cleaned and powder coated from a local shop.. I love how everyone is so DIY kind of person.. and I'm so new to it! I was thinking about that exactly! I think one of these articles says for larger parrots though that powder coating is not recommended because it is actually more likely to chip and is made of plastic, so would not break down like a non toxic paint and could cause impaction. But for budgies it’s ideal because they aren’t strong enough to chip it anyway. But powder coating can be expensive in the USA - because you need a large kiln. Unless you have access to one because you make pottery or something, or maybe people rent theirs out, because the powder coating “paint” itself is not expensive. You could also build a kiln if you have the space and skills to do so. The easiest alternative though is to use a non toxic paint and the methods described in these articles I think. I may do this eventually to my big white cage, also to change the color, because when taking photos of the birds through the bars the white reflects a lot of light and you can’t really see the birds inside. Although the white does look prettier than black. Maybe I can paint it orange or something xD Just kidding, though it is my favorite color.
