What does your budgie like to have as a treat?
My new budgie is getting along well, she deals well with my hand being in her cage and I want to try to start finger training. I’ve offered millet, which I’ve seen her eat when I’ve dropped bits of it in her cage but she won’t contemplate the sprig I offer her, so I put it in her cage for a few days and she hasn’t touched it. I’ve tried offering her a sprig of coriander which she wouldn’t react to, and again I’ve put that in her cage and she hasn’t touched it. She eats her seed but not from my hand. Is there anything else I can try to tempt her so we can start finger training?

Hi ellabow. Millet is usually the number one fave but she may not recognise it as food. I would clip a small piece right by her favourite perching place and see how that goes. My boys are naughty and won't eat their veggies, but they do nibble on a sprig of basil and they like carrot tops. When seeding grass is in season, I pick that and they absolutely adore it. Keep trying

Have you tried the red millet? It’s the favourite of most budgies....

Give her a bit more time to start to explore the millet in her cage. You can try pulling off a few little bobbles of the millet and dropping them into her seed pot. Perhaps she hasn’t recognised the spray of millet as being the same in as her food.

So true. Since mine tried red millet, they wont eat the other kind Have you tried the red millet? It’s the favourite of most budgies.... I was going to suggest the same thing, to drop a little millet in the seed bowl/trough and they may nibble it and realise it's food. Thank you all for taking the time to reply!
I put some bobbles in her bowl last night and moved the spray to her swing where she sits the most and I’m currently watching her (from afar!) feasting on the millet spray. Will give it a few days and then take the spray out and start offering it by hand? I’m still just putting my hand in, some days she is fine, others she is more skittish but I’m guessing that’s normal?

Also, does watching them eat ever get old? Or just watching them in general? I feel like I’ve literally spent the last 6 days starting at her 😂

Don’t stare at her. Watch but only with one eye. Wink, blink, close one eye so that you are not predator-staring at her. She is a prey animal, you are a predator. Staring at her will put her on edge and wondering if you are about to pounce.
Yes, now that she is eating her millet spray, remove it and offer her some from your fingers. If she will feed with your hand in the cage, good, otherwise offer to her firstly through the bars and then move on to inside the cage.

I don’t “stare” stare at her 🙈 I meant just side/one eyed looks at her. She has started to eat millet from the spray in my hand! She is still really up and down, and during the day she is more skittish than in the evenings.

I think Fred and Monty's favourite is baby sweetcorn - they go nuts for it! I am not sure how much they actually eat but they certainly enjoy ripping it apart I didn't know about red millet, could I please ask where it's available from in the UK?
