Hello from a newbie,
I'm getting ready to build a good size outdoor aviary in the boonies of Thailand. It will be a 20x30 ft. structure with 12 ft. walls and a peaked roof. The problem is finding the right wire mesh as the aviary will contain both Budgies and a few parrots. I can only find 1"x1" (14 gauge) galvanized wire mesh and I'm thinking the Budgies will be able to escape. Is my assumption correct?
Thanks, George Bowman

Hi, and welcome. I just measured the bars of my indoor cage. They are almost an inch apart. Having said that my budgies are adult, and not the wild variety, so bigger than an average budgie. Someone else with an aviary will be able to answer your question properly

My cage bars are about 1.5cm apart and I think that is the recommended spacing for cages.

I can measure when I get home tonight to be sure but I think my mesh caging is about 1/2 inch. I can just about stick my little finger in for them to peck from the outside I think an inch maybe too big, plus smaller it is it helps to stop unwanted visitors gaining entry.

Spacing of 1/2" or less is universally recommended.

I have a quarter inch on my aviary. Agree with Hezz, it's about keeping critters OUT as well as birds IN. We haven't the snake problem that you have but it's amazing what a mouse can get through
