Thought some of you might want this for reference.
Millet sprays can harbour spores and bugs. If you have some F10SC veterinary disinfectant, this is what to do...
Essentially you soak in an F10SC diluted solution, and leave to dry - in the sun or somewhere warm so they dry as quickly as possible.
From the company...
F10 SC would be ideal for soaking millet spray to help with the control of bugs, especially fungi and their spores.
Dilution and time are related – the stronger the solution the less time is required to do the job. The more resistant the bugs, the longer the time/concentration that is required. For simple soaking I would suggest that a dilution of 1:500 (ie 2ml litre) would be sensible and a period of ½ hour adequate time.
As F10SC is non-toxic (and is used as an oral treatment for some problems) there is no necessity to wash the sprays afterwards. Shake and allow to dry. Once you wash off, the moisture will once again encourage mould growth, spores arriving from the atmosphere. Allowing the SC to dry on the seed will provide an antimicrobial barrier. I hope that this helps. Regards Brian

Thank you Stace. I have stickied this. Do you just leave the millet to dry naturally after? Remembering that in the Uk we don't get much sun so we can't "sun-dry" it

I air dry it in the sun. But you could do the same hanging it on or near a radiator.

So here it is drying in the sun. I put 2 teaspoons of F10SC in 5 litres of water, left to soak for 30 odd minutes. No need to rinse. Shook it dry a little and damped down with paper to get rid of the excess water. Then placed it out in the sun. Should be dry in no time. Boo's getting a few rays of sunshine as well.

If you are going to wash millet, are you going to wash your seed too? I think this is all going down the track of making everything too clean, so there will be no bugs around for our pets to build any resistance to. Half the kids these days have asthma, why? Oversensitive to any and every piece of pollen, dust etc in the air, because kids don't play outside in the dust and dirt and build up any resistance.
I do understand breeders with large numbers doing this as any illness in a captive audience is like a case of diarrhoea in a nursery. Not for those with one or two at home. IMO

I bought the french millet from the same place my neighbour got his now dead bird. His other bird went to the vet on Monday and was diagnosed with a viral and a fungal infection. To tell you the truth, I couldn't get that stuff disinfected fast enough.
