As some of you know, I live in a first floor flat, therefore have no garden, and I really feel for the wild birds in this weather scrambling for food, so, I bought a window feeder, I also bought the hook to hang the wire basket of fat balls from, I bought a third feeder for the finches which has Nyger seeds in. On 16th (Tuesday) they will have been up 6 weeks and I've yet to have a single bird come to visit π’π’ I bought a wild bird seed mix, sunflower hearts, suet pellets, and dried mealworms. If I take some of the above in a jug and sprinkle it outside in the car park, it's gone in about half an hour, but they just won't come to the feeders, Any suggestions???

Oh, that's a shame, the food looks so tasty! Would it be worth sprinkling some seed onto the windowsill to encourage them over, just in case it's the feeders they are wary of? I think once one brave soul takes the first step there'll be no stopping them.

I've had exactly the same experience, jellybean. It was really disappointing. I am wondering if the birds might feel too exposed coming to the window. Are there any trees nearby? The year before last my neighbours went apes**t when a rat was spotted in our shared back courtyard and my bird feeding was squarely blamed. Since then I haven't tried again as don't want the agro. So, last year I got a couple of robust bird feeders and put them up in a nearby park. This worked for a while despite really ferocious squirrels, but then they disappeared during lockdown. This year I've been going out for walks with a pocketful of food and leaving it where I think it will be seen by the birds. It is rotten though that you can't actually get them to come to the window as that would be magical.

The house next to our flats have trees as does the neighbour over the dividing fence, but makes no difference. I'm so disappointed, for me, and for them, I know how much the wild birds struggle to find food in this weather, and I have an abundance of stuff not being touched. Good for you though birdguhl for your efforts.

Just a thought jellybean, is it a first floor window or second floor window? Maybe the wild birds are used to foraging on the ground and if you sprinkle some on the ground below the feeder, it will get them coming and maybe they'll explore a bit and find your feeder.

I was going to assume you had a balcony, JB, but perhaps you donβt. If you do, maybe move the feeders to the edge - hang them from the railing to entice them to come closer to the window and over time you might be able to bring the feeders to the window as they are supposed to be used.

I seem to remember a window feeder in one of your videos with a jay samwiseg. Memory's not great though so could be making it up

It's a shame your bird feeders disappeared birdguhl, some people Our garden birds eat me out of house and home so I tend to focus on feeding them and don't take seed with me when I go out (although I have been known to take carrots and veg for the wild rabbits . Having said that I spotted a pile of seed someone had left out for the birds on a woodland path when I was out for a walk yesterday and it made me smile, there are good people like you out there

Jellybean, we had the same feeder as you and it was used so much that the pigeons eventually learned how to use it and broke. It was wonderful because the smaller birds would come to feed and look right into my lounge....Mr Robin came at the same time every morning. When it broke we got a new one and itβs almost identical.....but, guess what,t the birds just stay away!! We have had it about a month now , and we have just had the really cold spell... but no birds on the window feeder, and ours is on the ground floor π€·ββοΈ

I wonder why they won't come to your new feeder ladybird π€ I'm at a loss as to how to tempt them. Maybe in the spring/summer when there are more small birds, which I'm not seeing a lot of at the minute, maybe then it will get used.....Hopefully. I was looking forward to not only feeding the birds but enjoying seeing them up close aswell. Fingers crossed they come back to your new feeder ladybird π€
