Thanks Ira, it’s always interesting hearing about the 2 experiences, it sounds quite different! Good Munchy is still your boy deep down though!

It is very different, starrymist. We'll have to see what happens with the others as to whether we maintain a small flock or decide to try with a single bird again. And he will always be my boy. He's especially precious to me. I love them all an equal amount but the relationship I have with the others is so different and Munchy has been through so much with me.

Sometimes I worry that I’m depriving Brodie with it just being him but he’s such a happy, busy boy & we have such a special relationship I don’t think he could be happier. Like you with Munchy - you’ve been through lots just the 2 of you, I guess.

Exactly. There are a lot of comments on the internet saying that you shouldn't have just one, but here I've seen plenty of happy single budgies, especially if you're home a lot. Treasure what you have, that's what I say.
I'm happy to have the others because when we moved out Munchy would call for me a lot if I wasn't in the room with him, because he was used to someone always being there. Now I know he has the others to chat to when we're out, but will interact with us if we try, so we have the best of both worlds.
I think once I change jobs and have shorter hours if I got a single budgie it would learn to manage with our work hours, because that's how things would be right from the off. Munchkin had had 8 years of my retired grandparents.

Like you with Munchy - you’ve been through lots just the 2 of you, I guess. You’re not depriving him. If you were, he wouldn’t be as happy and busy. As you say, you’ve a special bond. You’d see if he needed a friend.

Definitely! I knew Indie needed a friend after only having him a month, so you'd have been able to tell long ago if Brodie was lonely. He always sounds like a very happy and active boy. I am looking forward to the day of being able to try caring for a single budgie again, not going to lie. Their antics are cute but it just makes me feel sad when they move away from me. (I don't blame them for that today after the weighing fiasco though. If I can't get them used to the scale perch then I'll be back to bagging them up. ) Although maybe by the time I can have a single budgie again I'll be so used to having multiple budgies that it'll feel odd.

I too was worried that Nubby was lonely having experienced company with other birds but he has now settled into a really good routine. Training is going well and I might be hearing things but I swear he's trying out his vocals to speak?! I keep repeating the same thing when he does, so you never know. Mr Silly Sausage may prove he has some intelligence after all!!!

Oh that would be fabulous! Love you Nubbsy! 😘 Either that or he's deigning to acknowledge you as a flock member, samwiseg ! It's not all bad in flockland. I do sometimes get moments like this: This morning Yuki chatted up a storm on my finger to Munchy, sometimes also chatting to my finger, or my nose, or getting bopped by Munchy for daring to chat to Kevin. Or moments when Munchy, sometimes joined by Yuki, will assist with our computer work. I think the main downside for Munchy is that he's the one who can best figure out the foraging puzzles, so he solves it but then gets promptly chased away from the food because he's the least dominant. Usually by Indie, who is then immediately chased away by Yuki... So the others just reap the rewards of his hard work. No wonder he prefers his own cage, though he does get more nippy when he has his own space. Single birds must enjoy not having to share or compete for things. Anyway, we'll see how things go but currently I feel a definite preference to the single bird life if possible. If I'd known that my housemate was going to end up working from home I could have gotten a Hamberley for the living room, like I did when I was planning before getting Indie, and moved Munchy into there for my work days so that he'd have company. Providing he didn't disturb my housemate's work. Indie used to go nuts every time she had a Teams call. Ah well, things are what they are and even if they're not my preference we shall work through them. There are still enjoyable moments that I do my best to focus on.

My hair was never the same again, blueelephant! Kevins are the forbidden fruit that only the chosen Munchster may touch, samwiseg! We shall have to correct Yuki's behaviour!

I was repeating the usual "pretty boy" phrase and he was watching me with such keen interest and then just went " TWEET" once at the top of his voice. I said to him "well, thats not QUITE right yet, but 10 out of 10 for effort" We obviously have a long way to go
