Hi everybody, I am a new member. I have my budgie for the past 3 years now. When I got him/her, s/he was a little budgie so I wasn't sure about the gender, then the cere turned blue so I thought it was male. Later it changed into a brown cere, but with blue tinge near the nostrils. Please see the attached pics. Does it mean my budgie is a female? Or is it some health issue? S/he is happy bird, flying around all the time, no signs of distress so I believe s/he is a healthy bird. Thanks, Aliha

It could be your budgie is a female or that your budgie has testicular cancer

I believe that your budgie is male, but may have a hormonal imbalance or possibly something more sinister. I would take him to an avian vet and show the vet the photos of what the cere looked like before it went brown, just to show that the budgie is not a female. Hezz, what do you think?

It could be your budgie is a female or that your budgie has testicular cancer OR ... it could possibly be old skin on the male’s cere that hasn’t been rubbed off yet. Or that it may be from an under active thyroid! aliha, I don’t think there is much likelihood that your bird is a hen, if the cere has been that deep blue up until now. Unfortunately, testicular cancer is a possibility, but there are other causes for a male’s cere to start to turn brown, one of the most common being that the bird hasn’t been rubbing itself to slough off the old dead skin from the cere. You could try rubbing it yourself with a cotton tip moistened with either a little cooking oil, or warm water. In either case make sure that you avoid getting any into the nostrils. Hypothyroidism can also cause the cere to go brown. This is relatively easy to treat if this is the case. Does he have an iodine block, and if so, does he use it? If you can get iodine tincture from your pharmacy/chemist (25mg/ml, or 2.5%), add three drops of this into 100 mls of water each day for up to two weeks. If this is the cause, you should see a change in that time. The worst scenario is that it is caused by a tumour in the area of his testicles which is interfering with his ability to produce testosterone. If this is the case, unfortunately there is little that can be done to treat him. Lots of TLC and the best, fresh diet possible for the time you have him with you. The best of luck, and try the simple solutions before conceding defeat. Please let us know how you get on.

A big thank you to all of you. I'll take my budgie to a vet ASAP. He doesn't have an iodine block so I'll follow the instructions in this post and will add iodine to his water. I am very hopeful that it's not a tumor because other than the brown cere, he is a very happy bird.
I really appreciate your help. Thanks, Aliha

Hi again, When you say iodine tincture, are you referring to the first aid tincture (skin) or liquid iodine (oral)?
Thanks, Aliha

It is the concentration that is important. 25mg/ml (2.5%). If you are only able o get the stronger 5%, use half the amount or double your water volume. Different places refer to the same thing differently.

Thanks for the information. I could only find one with 20mg/ml (2%) strength.

That’s fine, only slightly less concentrated than the one I suggested. Use the same dosing instructions as given above.
