Carrot tops are one of the only vegetables my budgies can't resist but they are really difficult to get hold of. I found some videos on youtube about growing carrot tops from carrots so I'm giving it a go. You can either grow them in water or in soil. I'll let you know how it goes. Looking through youtube it seems you can grow lots of vegetables from the bits you normally throw away...

Good luck with the carrot tops blue48! Previous buds of mine used to devour them instantly but I need to persist with my current ones. Brilliant video - thanks for sharing. I am def going to try some of that. But can you really grow a pineapple...??!!

Great minds think alike blue48 , I'm growing carrot tops at the moment too. I remembered how much your boy's liked them and as Willow hasn't had them before I thought I would give it a go (I also remember doing it as a child). Mine are just the tops from the standard supermarket carrots which have no greens attached. I just put them on a plate with a thin layer of water, put them in a sunny spot about a week ago and am keeping an eye on them to prevent drying out. I think you can also place them on damp kitchen towel. So far I have tiny green shoots on about half of the carrots. I'm going to let them get a bit bigger before I let Willow try them but I'll just keep adding carrots to the plate as I get them. They would normally just go in the compost so I'm loving giving them a new lease of life. Good luck with yours, they look very healthy! Oh, just remembered I have watercress on the go too, just from one of the stems in a bag of supermarket watercress which had tiny roots on it, removed lower leaves and put it in a glass of water in a sunny spot. It's been about a week and it's grown lots of roots, I'll transfer it to a small pot of compost in the next few days and apparently you just need to keep the soil very wet. We'll see how it goes. I haven't watched your video yet but I've seen some of the others on youtube and I did try celery and spring onions in the past, both of which worked quite well. Not tried pineapple though!

I tried pineapple once and it went mouldy lol, but my mum managed one. She had green fingers and seemed to be able to grow anything. I bought the carrots fresh from the market this morning, the only place I can buy them with tops. I cut the tops off and put them in water, they usually last a few days. Well done willowsmum. That gives me hope

Great suggestion and video blue48! I recall growing the avocado and potato as school projects. I would love it if my guys would eat the carrot tops but I haven't given it to them enough for them to decide they like it. Whenever I bring them home from the grocery store, they go limp and yuckie too soon. It didn't occur to me to put them in a glass of water. Do you cut off a bit of the carrot to put it in water? I'll give it another try and also try to grow them.

That's a thought! 🤔 My theory (probably completely wrong) is that the tops look a bit like grass, so instead of looking suspiciously at it they go straight for it. They are so fussy, it makes me feel so good when I see them eating something green.

Your photo shows the carrot top with the leaves still attached. The tops themselves are not going to grow without their base; the carrot is the root of the plant.
Things that look most like their normal native food ie grasses, are the most likely to be investigated, from my experience.

Great suggestion and video blue48 ! I recall growing the avocado and potato as school projects. Did you go to school on the East Coast? I ask because all of my East Coast friends and family had the school experience of sprouting avocado pits and growing sweet potato vines, as did I. But few if any of my West Coast circle ever did. Different coasts, different curricula, it appears.

I'm giving this a go. My housemate says he can see a bit of growth, but we shall see.

I can't believe how much they've grown. I have 7 shooting, 2 of them with proper leaves, and 3 RIPs. I'll take a photo tomorrow.
