Wonderful blue48! I keep looking at mine and thinking, "are you growing? yes, no?" So I took a picture to put beside the picture of them when I first put them in the water. It looks like the yellow one and orange one are growing! Peeled carrots can grow! I may have to look at the carrots and see if there is a brown one with green on its top. Feb 26 Mar 2

Yay, success. You have more shoots on your carrots than me. Maybe I should have peeled them first lol I hope your buds enjoy them.

The ones here come with absolutely no top at all, so mine are starting right from scratch. I might have to investigate what other carrots the supermarket has on Thursday. Mine were the same @sillycat84, no tops at all when I bought them but they are getting there, slowly but surely. I was also really mean to the poor things as I only cut off the very, very end of the carrot, so I left them with a tiny amount of actual orange carrot if you know what I mean (I needed as much veg as possible for our tea that evening ) but they seem to be doing fine. I have now added Brussel sprouts, parsnip and lettuce to the collection, well there was space on the plate so I thought I might as well give it a go. I'll try to post a pic of my progress when I can.

Yes, willowsmum, would love to see pics! You're being very ambitious and hopefully you'll have a garden full!

Lots of ambition but not much skill here TPM

Surprise, surprise, surprise! The brown one is starting to grow! Here they are two days after the previous picture. So I think we can safely say that peeled carrots can grow.

BTW - I was telling a friend about this thread and the peeled carrot "controversy" and she said to tell Hezz that she'd buy peeled potatoes if they were available.

I think I’ve just smacked my forehead a little too hard!!! . I am a bit weird, but I like the peel on my potatoes. Well, interesting and very reassuring that your carrots-of-the-peeled-variety tops are growing. . That would indicate that they aren’t subjected to harsh chemicals to smooth them down as is the case with some canned vegetable varieties. I hope all these budgies are carrot top-lovers by the end of this exercise.

I think there is something quite satisfying about peeling and preparing your own vegetables, especially for a nice big pot of homemade soup.

Must admit I don't peel carrots or potatoes either, probably makes me doubly weird I hope our buds appreciate all of this. If not it'll be a big batch of carrot-top pesto I think!

I remember us getting a freezer but I don't think we made the transition from tins to frozen for years after that!

I don't generally peel any of my veggies either, except to remove any parts that look a bit off.
I’m actually pretty surprised that peeled carrots can grow! Those are some hardy little roots!

The tinned potatoes were just a bit odd when I tried them, didn't really taste like potatoes at all. I still think tinned veg is good to have as a standby though (for us, not the buds!). Always handy to have a tin of sweetcorn or peas hanging around at the back of the cupboard.

Ah jellybean maybe I'm just part of the instant gratification society - we want it now without having to work for it, at least concerning food. I don't mind spending hours knitting and reading. birdguhl I also remember the canned potatoes that we used to get for making stew. I hadn't thought of them in years. I'm not sure they even make them anymore.

I’ve never even heard of canned potatoes 😲 I like to cook when I have the time for it. I mean, I turn the stove in almost every day anyway, but only for super quick stuff - eggs, sautéed veggies... My OH though is a proper chef, so when we do have time to make a real dinner he’s usually teaching me something new
