Now that I have converted my two guys from seeds to fresh foods, they are eating a lot of sprouts and cooked lentils, rice and beans. They get food smeared all over their beaks which is adorably funny. They rub it off using a perch or give a shake and it goes flying everywhere - cage bars, walls, floor messy, messy birds! Does anyone have any tips on things they have in the cage that your budgies use to clean their beaks?

Haha.. Yes, mine do that too.. They rub it on the food bowl, my finger, the perch & sometimes shake their head to throw it all over everywhere 🤦♀️😅
I end up cleaning everything including the cage base and surrounding after every meal 🤦♀️
Interested to know if there are any tips..but I think those are their best table manners 😅

Yep, food gets flung everywhere! When it dries up though it’s easy to vacuum. Mine don’t get a lot on the cage bars though, but I feed them outside the cage often - on one of the the cage tops, which is covered, or on a little table with a cloth over it that I can put anywhere in their room. Maybe you can feed them outside the cage until a few hours before dinner, and feed their dry food portion only at night? As for beak scraping, mine usually use their branches, or whatever is nearby when they’re at the bowl - usually the cloth covering the cage or table. You can try offering a bath at the same time and see if they decide to use that to wash up. Sometimes it works, but more often than not my birds wait til I bring them outside to bathe, but maybe a bird that stays in more would be different with that. Dunno why, but mine love to bathe outdoors, and rarely indoors, even if the room is warm. Maybe cause they can dry off in the sun? I have seen people blow dry their birds (yep, even budgies!) and they seem to really like it! From a distance of course so as not to burn them - but they could fly off too if they don’t like it.

Pip has quite dense and alot of feathers and he loves apple, parsley, sweetcorn, basil, thyme, celery and he seems to get it stuck around his beak, so every week we end up getting cotton wool balls and cleaning him. It seems as though the husks get stuck and starts to get matted and we then have to catch him, well the oh has to. So we end up with a very loud, unappreciative bird who then refuses to even look at my husband for the rest of the day.
