It was good fun criswell and I think it made it less stressful as he could actually tell us what he wanted (to a certain extent) before he could tell us verbally. As a teenager he seems to be regressing with the verbal communication, maybe I should initiate signing again, it would force him to look up from the phone/laptop/PC screen

In my secondary school on certain days during our French lesson we left the classroom and went to another room in the school where there were individual booths we had to sit in and wear headphones.
Through the headphones we were asked various things in French, we then had to move a little lever/switch and answer back in French.
Did anyone else have this in their school? It's 48 years ago, it's a wonder I even remember it 😂😂😂

We didn't have that at my school jellybean. I would have preferred that to having to speak in front of the class. I'm just doing some Welsh practice now. I find it really hard rolling r especially in the middle of words. I have to practice by purring first and then sometimes I can do it at the start of a word. I'm finding that the hardest new sound to incorporate. I'm glad there is no one around to listen to me practicing. It's a bit all or nothing - either no roll at all or far too much. It's a good job I don't have a budgie copying what I say as he would be making all sort of weird sounds by now.

We didn't have that in our school jellybean! Did you go private?! I always did well at french at school but didn't pursue it and wished I had. But having said that, I have been learning it again for the past eight months?! And it's brilliant! Am so glad I have, one of the best things I decided to do during lockdown!!!

Not helped by a French teacher who used to throw the blackboard rubber at you if you weren't paying attention. Come to think of it I also had a Geography teacher who used to bounce his wedding ring off the ground like a rubber ball and a History teacher who used to pass a large white dunce hat around the class for you to wear if you answered incorrectly. Makes me wonder if I had a selection of weird teachers or if spending every day with hundreds of kids is enough to being out anyone's idiosyncrasies

I had a primary school teacher who used to throw chalk at people who were talking or if he was close enough he would come up to the table and whack a ruler down on it to get our attention.
One of my French teachers when I was doing my GCSEs was handing back work and found it very amusing to tell the whole class that someone (me) and said 'when I am boring' instead of 'when I am bored'. That really didn't help my confidence. I can't remember if she made me own up to it. I think she probably did.
My latin teacher was really cool. She used to set us homework and said it was up to us if we did it or not and we wouldn't get told off if we didn't do it. So of course we didn't do the homework. She didn't change her plans for what to do in lessons and because we hadn't done the homework we couldn't understand the next lesson so we very quickly started doing all the homework. I had a lot of respect for her. She also taught us how to stop hiccups too.

I think it’s great anyone who is learning languages now. I was good at French and German at school. I could probably work out written French now and get by, but we only did German for a year. I tried Spanish but didn’t like it.
Funny, our Latin teacher let us cheat, she was a funny woman

"She taught us how to stop hiccups too" What's the answer criswell? The one I know is, taking a drink and putting your fingers in your ears before you swallow.

We would repeat things in French (or German) and the teacher would be sitting at the front operating a control desk so that she could listen to each one individually.

"She taught us how to stop hiccups too" What's the answer criswell ? The one I know is, taking a drink and putting your fingers in your ears before you swallow. It involves stretching the diaphragm - stand up straight, hands above your head and stretched upwards as much as you can and hold your breath. It works every time. It works sitting down too but it's easier to stretch up when standing. I've shared that with so many people over the years.

willowsmum the primary school teacher was also the head teacher and I didn't like him at all. He was my teacher for the last year of primary school. It was a tiny school with only 3 classes and he wasn't a very good teacher. He got someone else in to teach us maths (fractions, long division especially) because he couldn't do it. About 10 of us took the 11+ and I passed and so did my friend. On the day we got our results he told us off for being happy in case the other kids were disappointed (none of them were) and we found out later it was because his daughter who went to a different school hadn't passed. I was very quiet at secondary school and thankfully most of my teachers respected that. They knew I could do the work so didn't put much pressure on me to speak up in class. The French teacher wasn't quite so obliging though.
