With everything else depressing, I decided to focus on birdies. I have been meaning to make a birdie bread since long. Today, I just pulled out some ingredients I had at home and made one without any reference. It felt good. They liked it too. It tastes good. It looks more like a cake, since I don't have a rectangular baking dish. Birdies won't mind 🙈 Uplifted my spirits a lot! Ingredients & Recipe: * Base: Wheat flour, corn flour, brown rice flour, mixed millet flour (browntop, red, foxtail, proso, kodo), raw egg, boiled blended quinoa * Herbs: Yellow mustard powder, fenugreek powder, dried herbs (oregano, thyme, rosemary, basil), 4-5 carom seeds, 2 pinch of cinnamon powder, 2 pinch of poppy seeds * Garnish: dry fruits (almond, cashew), daliya (broken wheat), coarse flour left after sieve * Veggies added: chop (kale, italian basil, pak choi, carrot, beet, corn), boiled mashed sweet potato Organic virgin coconut oil used for oven plate

That does look good! Breezie and Cookie are so good about eating the food you give them. My two guys just stare and think about it and maybe the third time I give it to them, they "might" try it. I have given them broccoli so many times but they have yet to eat any. I've tried it raw, lightly steamed, cut up, florets, stems but they won't eat it.

Oh, they reject food too.. they didn't like quinoa, brown rice, fenugreek seeds, sweet potato and so on.. Cookie is getting better at trying new things, out of curiosity. Breezie is good at trying leafy veggies.. So, I ended up adding everything they don't like in the bird bread recipe.. 🙈 That does look good! Made some seed treats for them today.. Used wheat & brown rice flour as the binding agent and half baked it for just a while. Birdies haven't touched it yet. Let's see how it goes.. I might remove it at the end of the day.. not sure, if it will go bad or not.. Right now, it's like an alien to them.. 🙈😅 Wasn't sure of using egg whites for binding or chia seeds..so used flour. Chia seed swell with water, so could give a try - that might not go bad as quick as the one with flour or egg whites. I haven't ever tried giving chia seeds to them, so have not been sure about it.. If I add chia seeds, would I still need to bake it or once it has swelled with water, just add the seeds and put them in the mould to dry off..? Another query is can they eat raw/roasted flattened rice occasionally (which is very popular for breakfast snacks over here). Apart from that, is raw pasta safe (saw the production process, they say its wheat to semolina + water)? Mostly, they won't eat it, but play with it.. I have been able to switch them to one meal of raw veggie chop, one meal of soft food, birdie bread and seeds. Just trying to add some variety. Cookie is better at eating what's given to her while Breezie acts like a seed addict & screams his heart out (with me giving in to him or else he just won't eat sometimes!) PS: Next on my list is a baked dish for birdies and me, using semolina and a few veggies (the ones they don't eat normally - will blend it this time, to avoid them being picky on it)..

Cookie ate the seed treat, but as of now, the size seems too big for them. Will make smaller ones in future. Apart from that, birdies are on a really healthy nutritious diet, whereas we aren't So, I have decided to consume the same veggie chop in some or the other way. Right now, I have a side salad dish in my mind.. Keeping that in mind plus the shortage of budgie safe veggies, I have made a batch to deep freeze. One with carrots, beet, broccoli, a bit of cucumber and kale. Separated Spinach & herbs (mint, rosemary, thyme, basil, oregano, lemongrass) to control intake for birdies. Separated bell pepper chop, since we aren't sure if bell peppers would taste good in a side dish for us.. Added a date label to keep a track.

I love it that the budgies are eating nutritiously and you aren’t. Sounds about the same here. I feed everyone else, animals included and then sit down for a cuppa and some toast with lots of butter and jam. You come up with such good ideas for them. I do a veggie chop that lasts them every few days and try to vary the veggies in it. Today they had mashed sweet potato and boiled egg, but were in two minds. They all tried it, so I guess that’s a start. The dogs loved what I had left in the bowl I’d mixed it in and then seemed to loiter around the cage in case any got flung out.

I Would be wary about feeding them raw anything that swells with cooking such as rice and pasta, or swells when water added before the water has been absorbed. The swelling in their crop or gut may cause discomfort. That may be old wives’ tales but not something I’d be prepared to test, without the word from someone who routinely feeds this sort of food.

That makes sense. I have read about water or saliva mixing with such food items in their crop and causing issues. I'll stay away from those items then.. on safer side.

Birds eat way healthier than us!! I love their sleep schedule, exercise routine and eating habits.. 😅🙈 I give them whatever is available during the season.. this is my first time making a large batch and freezing it, since there might be shortage of veggies (already there is some)& our plan to consume it too.. 🙈 I am thinking now to include their veggie chop in our side dish too.. We need to be healthy to take care of ourselves and them.. 😍🧡 Let's see how many days, I follow that.. 😅🙈 It's good that yours are trying out new food so soon.. mine were so addicted to seeds.. it took a really long time.. they still don't like broccoli and sweet potato.. i have tried chopping broccoli real small this time & added in their chop.. I might blend it and add it in the dough for chapati too some day, if they still don't eat it. 🙈 Many food items I have to blend or mash and add with others for them to eat, or they would just run away..

My daughter always laughs when she opens the fridge door as there’s so many salads and fresh veggies in there - all mostly for the animals!! The tortoise food I mainly grow but use some romaine, lambs lettuce or radicchio when necessary to bulk it out; the buds have their veggies, some of which are shared with the guinea pigs and I like to give fresh veg to our chicken every day! Anyone would think we were health freaks from the fridge! 😂

Haha... So true!!! ariella The other night I was thinking that I should get another refrigerator for us or a double door one!!! we just use a small space in the refrigerator.. everything else belongs to them!!! I love how it all started with just a small rack of birdie items.. now there's a bed drawer dedicated to them, an entire room, garden space for homegrown grasses and now their items are making space in the kitchen (their utensils, food, herbs and what not!). 🧡

The same as us. Amazing how such little creatures take over our lives. 😂 I wouldn’t have it any other way though. Now my kids are so much older i find the animal family keep me busy instead. No empty nest syndrome here - I just fill my life up with new pets! I have the most understanding hubby thank goodness.

Just kept the bell pepper top and used it today as a base for veggie chop. Nothing different, just playing with the presentation of their food. Though it doesn't matter to them 😂 They shred the bell pepper too a bit.. the rest went to the balcony birdies... aka.. mostly grey pigeons. She knows how to pose for the camera 🧡 she has also learnt how to use the swing! She swings on the swing now!! 😍

Excellent presentation skills. How lucky are Cookie and Breezie?! They are both picture perfect! I love watching mine on the swing. I could literally just sit and put my feet up and watch them for ages. I don’t often have the time to do that other than during supervised free flight time and then they’re not on the swing anyway. 😂
